Vibrant - Exhaust Alternative

FIRST POST

Background info:
- 2015 BMW X6 x35i M-Sport. Purchased for my wife in June 2018 completely stock and with 30K on the odometer - her former car was a Mazda 3.
- My current car is a 2015 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack w/ the 5.0 V8. Modifications include: 2.5 Borla Exhaust, CAI, 2018 Intake Manifold and Tuned for E85.

I have tried the following exhaust configurations:

1. OEM piping with muffler delete but retaining the OEM exhaust valve - DO NOT DO THIS - burbles and pops are there, but it is extremely loud and not in a good way. The drone is crazy irritating and causes vibrations within the cabin. Also, the exhaust valve will create a rattle when in the closed position.

2. OEM piping with muffler delete and Vibrant 1794 3 inch Resonator added about midway through the car - DO NOT DO THIS - the overall sound was much more enjoyable and deeper. The burbles and pops were still there, but the drone and in cabin vibrations were as well. The exhaust valve still created a rattle when in the closed position

Current configuration:
OEM PIPING + VIBRANT 1794 3 inch Resonator + Vibrant 10632 StreetPower Oval Muffler + OEM Exhaust Valve

- The sound is now much more refined. Louder than stock but definitely no where as loud as a Muffler Delete. There are no pops or burbles at this time, but I'm sure that will be remedied after the MPPK and/or JB4 is installed. No drone whatsoever even with the exhaust valve kept open with the OBD Maven App.

Total Cost = $430 including labor

Video to follow - please excuse my phone falling...

nice.
I went a different route and just did some custom piping inside the stock muffler.
Also no drone.

That sounds great too. I was going to do that as well but thought it may be more labor intensive. Either exhaust would be a great option for someone not looking to spend over $1K just for the MPE axle back aka just a muffler.

any reason for adding the resonator in the middle?

It helped to refine the tone and make the muffler delete less raspy. Some report that it helps decrease overall volume, but it did not in my experience. Also, resonators are supposed to work best when used as far back from the exhaust outlet as possible.

thanks for the explanation. i wonder how it would sound without the vibrant res and just replace stock muffler with the vibrant muffler. that could be another option for 35i

I'm sure that it will sound very similar to what I have. Honestly, if I were to do it over again I would have just gone straight to using the Vibrant Muffler and add MPPK for the burbles and pops.

Do you have a pic of the setup? So you would just replace the muffler with the vibrant muffler?

Yup. You cut the muffler off from the main piping and cut the tips off before the valves the. you weld on the vibrant muffler in the same spots. I'll try to get pi s to you later, my wife is so out with the X6 and I'm working on my other car.

Is the stock exhaust piping 2.5” on these cars? I have a 35d, but I assume the exhaust is pretty much exactly the same on the 35i.

Nice sound but too much work. What I did was very simple. with my tune I opened the exhaust flap and disconnect the wire, it stays always disconnected. With bm3 tune car sounds amazing with some nice cracks. I was going to buy mpe but after this setup im totally satisfied.

you dont have to disconnect the wire to have the flap open all the time. use the obd dongle and bimmerlink to leave the valve in open position

Hi Can you take some pics of the setup when you get a chance? Just ordered the vibrant muffler, want to try this route. Did you keep the exhaust flap intact?

Just want to make sure I tell the muffler shop exactly what to do.

he has a vibrant resonator too. it does not sound like you buy it so just tell the muffler shop to cut the original muffler off and replace it with vibrant muffler. post some clips when you are done please. i really want to do this too

What’s a good exhaust shop in Vancouver?

So I swapped the muffler... definitely has more sporty sound but not as aggressive as I expected. No drone, don't need the resonator. Def louder on low rpms as well. Not sure if matches the MPE muffler, but pretty good alternative for total cost of 370$ with install.

Wonder if with a chip it would be louder? Thinking of getting JB4 or racechip next.

Also the obd adapter and bimmer link doesn't keep the valve open permanently. Tried a few times and when I restart the car it's closed. Will try to take a video clip next time.
