Post Latest NHTSA Recall: 2014 - 2017 X5’s (18V755)

Folks,

Just received an E-mail (as many of you have probably also received if you signed up for recall notices from the NHTSA) that a potential “Coolant Leak Within EGR May Cause Fire” for the 2014 -2017 BMW X5’s.

Recall is for Diesel models. Please see the attached PDF for more information!

NHTSA Recall ID Number: 18V755
Issue Date: October 25, 2018
Expected Recall Start Date: December 17, 2018
BMW Customer Service Number: 1.800.525.7417

Link: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=18V755

Summary:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

Affected model list:

328D (2013 - 2018)
535D (2014 - 2016)
740LD (2015)
X3 (2015 - 2017)

If you haven’t already done so, reference my previous post below with the deets on signing up for NHTSA recall notices for your specific (any make/model) vehicle(s):

I looked up our 35d, and they say it isn't up for recall. Anyone else check theirs?

Dont think they have linked all the VINs to the recall yet. Also thought it went back as far as 2010 on X5 35d's

I checked mine (2014) and it was not there either. I guess we'll just wait and see.

It says the recall will start on 12/17/18.

OP Thanks for posting, our X5 is a 35i but it will affect our 328d.

I'm in the UK and they took mine in for a service last week and a 'complementary check' on the EGR system

So they took it apart, told me it needed replacing but there weren't any parts in the UK or Germany and will be at least 6 weeks!

So I'm in a rental now until they make some parts!

If they indeed replace intake manifold, that would be awesome. No need to clean it for another few years.

Not quite yet, we need to wait for the letter in December.

"Q12. How will I be informed of this Safety Recall?

You will receive a letter in December via First Class mail advising you of this Safety Recall, and to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW center as soon as possible to have this Safety Recall performed. You can locate your nearest authorized BMW center at www.bmwusa.com/dealers."

As a 40d owner in Europe I checked my connected drive account but see nothing there. I guess this recall will apply here just the same, does anybody have experience with these types of recall in Europe and whether or how they show up in my connected drive account? Thanks!

At my local dealer now for 20K mile service on my 2017 3.5d. While requesting my signature on the paperwork, the service adviser mentioned nothing about the recall.

While reviewing the work order, I asked that he check to see if my vehicle was impacted by any recalls. He immediately mentioned the EGR recall. When I asked if mine was included, he said yes and that there were no parts available.

I find it very odd that they made no mention of the recall or that mine was affected by it and essentially glossed over the fact.
