Gunning it - when to not?

Long story short, my 35i with mppk and mpe is making me drive with a heavy foot and I find myself switching it to sport, and going all out. I love how you can hear the exhaust suck in the air and switch gears - the car is just a joy to drive.

Here's the question though - when is it bad to do that? I think when the car first starts up, you should give it time to breath a little but anything else I should know before doing unnecessary damage (besides to my wallet b/c of gas)?

thanks

As a rule of thumb, always ensure your oil temperature is warm and up to full operating range. Never push your car when the oil temp is cold. Its the reason the the E9x M3 and E60 M5 were blowing motors from failed rod bearings.

Most important. Get engine up to operating temp first.

In cold weather- remember that there are element of your suspension that never really warm up- this pertains more to driving style and road conditions- but I tend to take it easy on really cold weather- even if the engine is warm. Just erring on the side of caution in cold weather...

You may want to ensure that you are using a synthetic oil as well, if you are worried- for my money it is cheap insurance.

I used 0-20 mobil 1 in my 2010 Forester turbo a few winters ago- ran fine even when it hit 60° F on a winter day.

For what it's worth, I warm up for about 5 second then pull out and drive gingerly for the first 1/3 mile. I've a 2014 F15 w/ MSport, and a race chip, the first transmission shift seems a little stiff and does not 'upshift' perfectly smooth- nothing harsh, just noticeable. I go easy for the first few miles-

Perhaps use the torque meter to make sure you are not stressing anything until you want to?

I always let me the oil temperatures come up then I know the block is warmed up and likely the transmission, etc. then it’s fair game. Also I don’t speed much in New York because I don’t want to deal with points on my license. I never speed in residential areas and I usually drive with traffic in town. That all said once I’m out of state I’ve hit the governor more times then I care to count. I always pull over promptly sometimes before I even see the lights.

The owners manual states to drive slowly/moderately until engine has warmed up. I usually let the oil temp hits operating temp before flooring it.

In addition make sure your engine oil is at proper level (check level when refueling fuel), use correct oil grade (0w to 5w and 30 to 40), and when your coming close to your next oil change (@ 7500 miles) try not floor it often as oil has reduced protection level (depleting TBN/additives), and drive safe!

FWIW, Tire's need to warm up, too. I'd guess that by the time the oil temperature is up the tires will be warm, weather conditions observed.

The manual gives a number like 1.2 miles under which a tire is considered cold. Tires have an operating temperature at which they perform as designed. Too cold and they don't grip as well, too hot and they abrade before they should.

This is why I love BMW- they give you a quantity to workwith. Hey- I know there are a dozen factors that can affect this- I'm actually better than most at figuring this out (long story)- but they give us something to start with. And that takes a little bit of guts. The engineers I work with (pharmaceutical device) are so afraid to make a statement- drives me nuts.

Maybe i should see what openings are at BMW...

I feel the same way. On motorcycles BMW tells us the temperature reference number for tires, 68F. It then reports the tire pressure adjusted to that.

I'm surprised that the car manual isn't similar.
