It's probably the same rubber there using for their valve seals!!

Seriously, most common bmw failures are due to poor rubber used. Valve seals, oil leaks like valve covers or oil filter housing, bushings, faulty wiring, sunroof seals, etc.

I have a third party. Not sure why people only go for BMW extended, the coverage sucks.

Are you sure that's for active steering? Im getting ready to replace both front tension struts (I suppose another fancy word for control arm) for non active steering and it shows 31-12-6-851-691/31-12-6-851-692 on both realoem/bmw dealer part sites, whats ironic is that the same part number shows for active steering only on FCPeuro which makes me wonder how credible FCP's information is

https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...rm-31126863169 - this seems to be the correct one for active steering

Wow you're right.. that's a little disconcerting. Maybe it would be best to call them. All I know is that it was an exact match for mine and I have active steering. Also I haven't had any issues.. knock on wood.

yeah got me confused as non active says something about rubber whereas active is hydraulic yet fcp lemforders seem to list both part numbers compatible hopefully the fcp ones you have came hydraulic

I just wanted to provide some feedback on this repair as i just had this completed on my 2016 X5 50 msport with 88k miles. I bought the parts from FCPEuro back over 2020 thanksgiving holidays and received a 10% discount. My friend who is a German repair tech did the replacements and told me that the metal on metal noises were days away as the ball joints were toast. My car is equipped with dhp and adaptive M suspension and active steering so the parts were a bit more expensive than non active steering parts

I bought these : 31126851691/31126851692 for $136.46 each
and these: 3112686482131126864822 for $207.24 each
and all of the other necessary single use nuts, etc. from FCP Euro

I also went ahead and bought these Powerflex subframe bushing sets:
2804617 & 2804618 for approx $190 shipped

I can sway that the creaking as well as the steering slop is now gone. it tracks nicely and the powerflex bushings have tightened the bounce up as well.

Def worth the $$ and effort - truly sucks that my BMW extended platinum warranty to 100k miles wouldn't cover any of these repairs

thanks to everybody that posted their insight and experiences with their own suspension woes as well as it proved helpful for me on this exercise

Appreciate the update! I just bought parts for a front control arm bushing refresh myself. I purchased the upper wish bone control arm for both sides, as well as the bushings for 31126851691/31126851692 but I didn't purchase bushings or new arms part # 31126864821/31126864822. Do they make bushing replacements for these arms? If so, someone please let me know that part #. I'll be installing these parts weekend after next.

There's a technical service bulletin on the wishbones if you still have warranty coverage. It's SI. B31 02 17 from November 2017 covering F15 and f16 except M up to June 20, 2017. My dealer did not know about it so I had to provide it.

I appreciate that - I think if my car was still under the 4yr-50k mile factory warranty then it would be covered. I asked that question numerous times before pulling the trigger on the parts and that was always the response

Glad yours was covered 👍

OEM control arms are $350 to $400 A PIECE!!!

OEM bushings can be had for far less.

So these are the bushings that commonly go bad? Go figure, I ordered all the other control arm replacement parts except these bushings. I like your idea of just replacing the bushings to save money and since that's the failure point. Do you have the part # for just the bushing replacements for #13 arm on the diagram above? I've already bought the bushing replacements for the #8 arm (#9/#10) on the diagram. Going to use my buddies press so might as well replace the bushings you're referring to since I'll have the front suspension torn apart.

My car has been making a thunking noise lately coming from the front passenger side suspension. I really only hear it when backing out of my garage or at very low speeds. Car def doesn't feel as connected to the road. Sounds exactly like what you experienced.

Usually it's the large bushing in the forward lower control arm that gets loose.
Have you thought about installing polyurethane bushings?

The confusing part is what is considered the "forward lower control arm"? #13 or #8 in the diagram: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...59#31126864821

You actually chimed a thread I made a few weeks back about my issues with my front suspension. I had poly bushings in M3 awhile back but it was a full coilover race setup as well. I'd rather not go w/ poly on my stock suspension family SUV. Also, poly can squeek over time.

#9 is the bushing that is usually the culprit. The other bushings are solid and rarely fail. Whereas the large bushing is designed with voids in the rubber bushing, supposedly for additional dampening, or is it so it fails and bmw makes more money. You decide!

Appreciate the feedback! A guy said the same thing in my other thread. I'll be replacing those #9 bushings.

I'm looking at replacing my front control arms because of this worn bushing issue. I see a couple options on parts and curious which ones people have tried.
1) OEM BMW(TRW supplier) approx. $350 each
2) Lemforder approx. $200 each
3) Delphi approx. $65 each

Of course, very interested if anyone's tried the Delphi one(Delphi is a known big name supplier)

20in staggered setup steering have a mind of its own over road imperfections.
bushings look average and got a ball joint that seems loose.

Just ordered both front lower arms From rock auto (Moog) and powerflex poly bushings to install on the new arms. i will report on my findings once all installed and aligned.
