3G or 4G chip? BMW will discontinue connected drive support for 3G
Apparently BMW is scheduled to discontinue connected drive support for 3G vehicles:
https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...pdf/3G_FAQ.pdf Do our vehicles have 4G chip? Vehicles factory-equipped with 3G telematics will lose services like advanced real-time traffic info, for example. Last edited by musa; 04-28-2021 at 09:17 PM.. |

Not that concerned - there’s nothing their maps do that any number of apps can’t provide on my cell phone.
To answer your question more directly, I think it depends on what year your car is as models before a certain point in time were 3G. There’s a similar thread in the F15 forum you can search for. |

Do you know if there's a 4G chip upgrade path for affected vehicles? Could you please follow-up with that query? The after-market players must be gleefully rubbing their hands .

I can't stand how they blame carriers for this issue. Make the equipment more modular and user swappable including the SIM card.

"BMW's 2018's are 4G and there is no end date for this current technology" so sayeth BMW. Further " 3G non support decision of carrier & beyond control of BMW" This from an inquiry to customercare@bmwassist.com yesterday.

In time 4G will eventually fade away just like 3G, as 5G becomes the new standard.

I was contacted by BMW of North America on this topic for my 2017 F85. They say I am eligible for a technology upgrade to maintain functionality of BMW ConnectedDrive services.

Interesting experience over 2day period. My home alarm system company ( SimpliSafe) figured out I had 2G while on troubleshooting call with them. Sent me Verizon 4G chip and board to place in the unit. Disassembly 4 minutes reassembly 4 minutes. I realize this was extremely EXTREMELY accessible. But if home alarm monitoring company is handing them out……..[IMG][/IMG]

Picture of old 2G board..looks identical to 4G… just saying… $14 month monitoring service on $300 of self installed alarm system and they just give everyone on the 2G a bump to 4G for free??? Come on BMW!!

Sucks I won't be able to pre condition my 40e anymore from my phone !
That was a nice option to heat and cool the car in the winter and summer ! The other funny thing is the new part numbers for the 2018 and earlier ones are all superseded for the new part number with 4g compatibility.... So wouldn't that mean if I went into the dealer and asked them to replace my com they would have to replace it with a 4g and not a 3g considering they don't make them anymore? |
