so for this mod, its the addition of the X-pipe and what else? Do you open up the muffler and replace the perforated pipes with solid pipes?

Thanks!

Add x-pipe and delete muffler (eg. take it off and store in your closet). Keep the tips - you will reuse them or you can buy aftermarket tips that you like. Saves about 50lbs weight and opens up deep V8 sound nicely.

Naturally instead of muffler - you are going to weld in some L-shape pipes (mandrel bent) and attach tips to them. That's it.

P.S. Mandrel bent only means they use a machine that bends them smoothly and nicely without edges. Sorry for typos

There are no valves on the 50i.

Anyone know where there are two different resonators used? Assuming this is oem.

I think they are both resonators: one is for cylinders 1-4 and the other for cylinders 5-8. They both are straight through design - so nothing inside them except maybe some resonating plates to decrease droning at certain rpms (usually about 1-2k rpms). This is what one member found when he removed both resonators: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1091151

He said removing them doesn't affect sound much - which is to be expected since resonators are mainly for catching drone frequencies, but they don't muffle sound much. The main decrease in sound is from rear muffler and from stock cats - which are right behind turbos under the hood in our X5 50i.

So with this muffler delete mod - if you let's say install catless Downpipes instead of stock ones - it will basically be a straight pipe exhaust and will probably deafen everyone within a half a mile radius.

from owner of this x5 that modded stock exhaust. This is what he did:
1. Cut out mid resonators - there's 2 of them and weld in straight pipe
2. Cut open rear muffler. It's best to cut open it from top - that way it won't be visible that it was opened - cosmetics wise
3. There will be a bunch of perforated pipes inside. Take a photo of them. Cut them all and throw away. Weld in straight pipes exactly repeating pattern of how perforated pipes were (I guess photo is not really needed it's not that complicated, but just in case if you will forget how pipes were initially placed inside the muffler)
4. Throw out steel wool fiber insulation and repack/replace it with new one (I guess old one can be reused if yours is relatively new and in good shape)
Has anyone done it this way? Particularly without removing the resonators?

I came from an E90 M3 and I only had the perforated pipes inside the muffler replaced with solid pipe. It sounded perfect with no drone. I may start there and see what it gives me.

You can certainly try that. It's just a lot more work than just deleting muffler and storing it in closet (and you can later weld it back if you'll want to go back to stock).

P.S. Resonators stay on car - no matter what mod you'll do - there's just no sense touching them.

keep in mind that removing the muffler is cutting the weight with about 35 pounds which is not that bad . i was thinking to go cut open the muffle and cut the perforated pipes and weld back solid ones but too much work and i think it will be the same . I am running now on just X-pipe and muffler removed/delete. Still have the resonators and i like it . I might try removing them too first and then if its too loud i will try the muffler mode .

So I went today to Meineke today and the 3" X pipe that I Bought is way too wide for the tunnel where the pipes run thru , so I re Order a 2.5" X pipe maybe I can get this done Saturday. They Quote me $423.09 and I'm supplying the X pipe and the Tips.

That seems high for some simple cuts and welding. But who am I. What they charging per hour of labor? $75

That's too high. Unless it's a usual price at your location. As for X-pipe I bought cheapest one for $27 or something.
Maybe try another place?

I considered it and decided against it. The reason is poor quality of cutouts. They all leak and what is even worse rattle. So many end up keeping them open all the time - which is essentially same as doing muffler delete (which saves weight too).
