Wow - that is extremely impressive! The brakes sure did last a long time. My wife wants to keep her new 18 35d for a long time, so love hearing stories like that!!

The front still show pad left and should easily get to over 150k miles on them. Most of my miles are highway type, so not a lot of stop and go. The vehicle has exceeded my expectations with engine performance and the body still looks like new.

225,000 miles on my 2004 X5

Hi, 1st post here...

I bought my 2004 certified used X5 3.01 14 years ago. I drove the snot out of it for 225,000 miles. The only major issue was a cracked expansion tank in mid summer last year. I've changed the oil only two times in all those years, and add about a 1/2 quart every couple of months or so since new. I've been through a few sets of tires and brakes, and replaced the battery once, and 3 or 4 door handles..... The only issue at all is slow windows up front.

It is still my daily driver, but I will by buying a 2012 xdrive35d w/60,000 mi. tomorrow probably just to get a newer ride.

I don't worry one bit about longevity.

Cheers!

My wife's 35D 2011 currently has 160K miles but sadly the DPF seems clogged up (not ash, but carbon) so it may seem like we will need to change it. However, the truck hasn't been trouble free. We've had our share of small to large issues. Although we will probably change out the DPF and continue on, I don't think we will be continuing with a Diesel for the next one as just the DPF seems to be problematic with any diesel and everything that comes with diesels (oil changes etc).

On a slightly other note, I really like the build quality of the E70 compared to the new gen X5's. In fact, even my old E90 compared to my F30 shows huge differences in cabin noise, and overall cheaper build quality in all the newer cars. I've been very disappointed with BMW and all other german brands (Merc, Audi) that have all started to included more plastic'y finishings. My F30 335's door lock rattles. I don't have little stupid things like that in the E70. Everything is solid.

In US - and likely in Canada too, - E70 came with M57 diesel, while F15 are equipped with N57. Those are completely different engines, and any M57 stories are irrelevant to N57, and not just the engine itself, but pretty much all auxiliaries.

The biggest 'unknown' in N57 is timing chain, which based on experiences from the rest of the world may to require replacement around 150...200K miles. It's located in the rear of the engine, so tranny has to be removed at least, i.e. $$$.
The rest is rather trivial and from what I could gather is an upgrade (=more reliable) than M57 assuming proper maintenance.

Just about to hit 150k miles on my 2011 E70 35d. Had the def tank and the egr cooler replaced under warranty. Aside from that have had to replace one NOX sensor, thermostat, glow plug module, MAF sensor, and throttle body. Cleaned carbon from the egr and intake as well.

2014 X5 Diesel, Timing Chain

Smyles,
I saw you comment about the X5 diesel timing chain as an unknown. I live in California and I didn't think you were referring to my motor.
I have been experiencing a pulsating low sound upon acceleration at lower speeds. After taking to the BMW Certified Mechanic he thinks it is the timing chain. It sounds like this is a $6-$7k job. I have not had the work done yet.

I also just had a couple of valves/injectors replaced, another $2k. I am definitely over the cost of repair. :(:(

Does anyone have any more info or recommendations on the timing chain?

Mine is in the shop right now. Has been there for three weeks and will be there another month. The fuel pump went and out metal thru the fuel system. It is covered by warranty as it is a 2018 with only 30,000 km. The cost is around $20,000 to replace Everything that had fuel in it. Every thing from the tank to the injectors and rails. Pumps everything. I’ve owned a lot of diesel vehicles and this is a first. Get extra insurance

170000km and going strong

Our 2015 f15 x5 is still going strong. The EGR had to be replaced (tested fine and was within recall specs to not need replacement however 3 months later completely failed) I was out of warranty but dealership went to bat and was able to have it replaced. At the same time they cleaned carbon build up on valves etc with crushed walnuts. We live in harsh climate in Canada -40c to plus 40c. Beside the above (knock on wood) we have had no issues with the Diesel engine. Had a 335d and had the same experience beside the egr issues above. You take care of it, don't drive it like you stole it when cold and let cool off and that's the recipe.

127000 miles on my 35d and not a single engine issue or change in performance since day one. Have cleaned out the emission system and replaced sensors under warranty. My V8 BMWs have all had more spend in repairs by 50k miles than this car in its entire maintenance history. The fuel economy is incredible and highway cruising is effortless.

Still Going Strong

My 2014 35d M-sport is coming up on 7 years old and 80000 miles. Original owner. I have only had the soft-close door recall and that's it. I change the oil every 5k miles, keep up on all the filters, and will do the transmission fluid/filter, coolant, and serpentine belt this spring. Glad to see others are having good luck.

I live in Canada and have 160,000 kms on my 2014 35d. No engine issues but am getting EGR/ SCR delete. EGR cooler has a recall. Driven over long highway stretches so no SCR has had lots of time to regenerate to remove ash. Change oil every 10k kms with low ash oil. Recently, I have had an intermittent clunk where they replaced the sway bar.

35d

I’ve had zero problems 2017 35d it’s loaded except i didn’t want the M sport option too much extra money to just a fy but I do have DHP and I tow and 27’ foot enclosed trailer in the winter .... I do drive 60 miles to work everyday one way ...never never let it sit and idle ... worst thing you can do with the modern diesel motors ...never never stomp on the gas pedal until that temperature is up ...I have 98,000 miles in Wisconsin weather ...I plan to drive it until at least 200,000 miles ... I sure would like a new X7 diesel but non are made for the USA ..so my next choice is at this time would be a chev Tahoe diesel straight six 3 liter.

Garage List
MY14, sitting at 93k. I do make sure I get highway driving miles and now I am changing my oil at 6500k (personal preference). Just did every/all oil services at 90k and also switched to Liqui Molly 4200.

If I go on short drives (quick stops), I leave the engine running. Every other tank I use Stanadyne additive. I also do not use my Auto Start/Stop. Zero issues.. 🤷🏽

It is funny because everyone here in my area that has a diesel leaves their engine running on quick short stops and report no issues.

I am currently at 238,000km or around 148,000 miles. Debating on getting timing chain done it’s around 7k Canadian which is steep. I’ve had egr repaired twice under some recall warranty.

Dpf I think Will need to be changed around 250k, got an oil filter housing and control arm (again lol maybe 3rd time) that’s failing. Mostly highway miles for me and religious oil changes. I think my chain can last to 250-300k. No high pressure fuel pump issues. My mechanic has the same car and according to his research that is an issue that never happens in Europe because I believe there’s more sulphur or certain additives that aren’t in North American diesel kind of like the same problem with the Volkswagen diesel Touareg. So we both add an additive in our car and I haven’t had any issues with that.
