No..I leave this type of work for the professionals. It cost me 40$ for each to coat. Those with removable tips I don't understand why you would pay $90 for cans.

Where'd you get this done? I live in NYC and would pay $40 each in a heartbeat

I'd use Rustoleum Aircraft Remover.
Huf - I used the Rustoleum Aircraft remover today and it came out perfect. Thanks again!

I can't believe how boring the chrome exhaust tips are. Need a couple of non-driving days on my schedule to re-do these so the VHT has time to set without the exhaust vapor.

I don't have Msport, so my tips are not removeable…

Today I was cleaning up car, noticed the exhaust tips were discoloring. I wanted to paint them black a while ago, but never got around to it. Anyways, I cleaned up the tips with rust remover as best I could, then did three layers of primer and five layers of matte black.

Matte black for me is great since it basically means I don't need to lean the exhaust anymore since the soot is black too.

Anyways the instructions says I can use an oven to cure them or do them on my car. Oven is not possible since my tips are welded, but the heat cycle to do on the car I assume as for something like the exhaust manifold can actually get pretty hot. I don't think the cycle did anything to cure it. The tips didn't even get that hot.

Thoughts?

Primer done:

Three coats of black:

Finished result:

I'll sand a little to get rid of the some of the imperfections.

I like the matte black too. I think if you got the color a little darker it would look nicer.

I agree. It still looks like primer. Throw some darker black coats on.

Do you think a coat of primer would help prevent the gloss black VHT coat from chipping away? I thought it already contained primer so not sure it's adding value?

I did five coats before, but looks like it wasn't enough. Decided to use up the rest of the can to finish it.

I started by doing three more medium coats over the course of an hour. This turned it a little darker. I waited three hours for it to fully dry. After it was fully dry I noticed it was not smooth...; basically there were blotches here and there.

So I went over each tip starting with 1000 grit, then 1500, and finally finishing off with 2000 grit. After this both tail pipes were silky smooth however I was still not satisfied and there was still some paint left in the can.

After the sanding, I cleaned both with soap and water, let it dry off. I put three more coats on each tip using up the remainder of the spray paint.

This is the preliminary result:

(It's a little shiny because I took this right after the final coat)

I plan to sand it some more with 2000 grit tomorrow morning after drying overnight to bring it to a butter smooth yet still matte finish.

Not sure, but I don't think the VHT stuff includes primer because on the instructions for the black spray I bought, they suggest you start with their primer which I bought separately.

Does anyone have the recommended sandpaper grit for prepping the chrome (pre-application)? I've seen lots of different responses across the forum here, but would love for someone with conviction to provide some color. Thanks!

Hey, how are yours holding up? I know some in the Northeast had issues with chipping. How did you end up prepping?

So far still looking fresh. Applied back in May, so haven’t been subjected to the northeast wintry conditions as of yet.

Prep wise, I basically just scrub it with soap and water and applied 5 coats with the tips attached.
