2015 X5M with 15k miles vs 2017 with 45k miles?
Hey F85 peeps. A good friend of mine is shopping used X5Ms currently. He's found a 2015 executive vehicle with 15k miles on it, and a 2017 with 45k miles. I've had a couple of turbo six BMW's, and am currently over in the G01 forum for my X3 M40i. So I told him I'd ask around on here for any info or recommendations. From what I can tell the engine is unchanged in those model years, and the idrive is newer on the 2017? Any reason you would choose lower miles and a couple years older vs newer with more miles?
I have heard some not so great things about the reliability of the turbo V8 in the older X5 50i versions, not sure if the longevity of the engine in these is improved, or if it's still remotely the same engine. I know he doesn't put many miles on it, and may only have it a couple of years. 2015 is $52k, 2017 is $56k. Not sure what the depreciation per year vs low mileage analysis is but I'm guessing per year they drop maybe $10k? That might make the 2017 the better deal? Any input appreciated! |

I recently bought my 2018 w/ approximately 48k miles. I’d say getting the newer model, regardless of mileage is a better ‘deal’ given the improvements over the years. The 2015 sounds overpriced by a long margin given the rate of depreciation. Mine was basically half of the retail price after 2 years. Of course the actual condition of the vehicle, irrespective of mileage, may be a factor to tip the scales in favor of one or the other.

2017 introduced Apple Car Play, wireless charging, and the updated iDrive. Apple Car Play was a $300 stand alone option/not standard, though most seem to have it. Wireless charging was part of the Executive Package/not standard, though most X5M's have this package.
Beyond that, there is no difference between a 2015 & 2017. It comes down to what your friend desires more - a lower mileage example that's 2 years older or the 2017 with triple the miles of the 2015, but a bit newer. |

The 2017 might provide more options to your friend to buy extended warranties, assuming it's still under factory warranty. Extended warranties are insanely expensive for X5Ms outside of factory warranty.
Are they optioned similarly? |

Or..
If he drives it for three years and puts 30K miles, what's more attractive? A 2017 with almost 80,000 mikes or a 2015 with under 50,000 miles? |

The 2017 probably has a few months of warranty left or a few miles till 50k miles which nulls the new car warranty. In the case of the 2015 the warranty is already expired but the low miles is appealing. I would do a deep dive on the 2015 X5M and go for that one for sure! I just traded in my 2015 X5 Msport i50 that was loaded and purchased the 2018 X5M. Love it. I had no issues with the X5 i50 and the engine at all. Extremely dependable. Important to check the build date on the 2015's X5 i50's. I do recall doing research on the engine and it was switched out in 2014 to the newer V8 which fixed issues the 2013 models had. Go for the 2015 if it's a 2015 build but do good research on the car. I'm always suspect of vehicles with very low miles for the year build. So I'd do deep homework. Pay for the service like beenverfied.com and search the vin to see what kind of history it has and also pay for a car fax. 50k is a lot of money so do your due diligence. Best of luck!

2015 X5M with 15k miles vs 2017 with 45k miles?
iDrive updates came in 17. No difference between 17s and 18s other than the Blackfire (I think) paint and interior option.
If the 2015 is a true 15k mile car and has been taken care of as such, I think I'd go that route based on condition. Less leather wear, less front end paint chipping and less sand blasting behind the wheels. Options may sway me too. B&O stereo and 21" wheels were a must for me. |

Just a small package configuration change - no Driver's Assistance Package was available in 2018. All of it's components were merged into the Executive Package for 2018. |

The 2017 x5m had a driver assistance, and driver assistance plus package correct?
And the 2018 x5m's driver assistance/driver assistance plus was integrated into the Executive package? Thank you for your response. |

Correct, though there was just one drivers's assistance package (Driver's Assistance Plus) on the 2015-2017 F85 X5M. The F15 had a driver's assistance & driver's assistance plus.
