Homage to the e53’s style 87 wheels

This was more of function & economy over form...I mounted my old style 87 wheels to the f15 today...mounted with performance winter tires (Yokohama BluEarth V950 tires).

Since I swapped the staggered 20” Nitto Motivo tires that were on my e53 X5 over to my f15 X5 (couldn’t stand the Pirelli run flats that were mounted)...I needed something for winter. Couldn’t find any 19” wheels within my budget knowing that I’d also need to buy new tires, too...so I got out the calculator to see if I could somehow work the style 87s to work on the f15.

The biggest hindrance (obviously) is the wheel hub/center bore. The e53 has a 72.56mm hub...but the e70 and f15 X5s have the larger 74.1mm wheel hub/center bore. So to even begin to mount the wheels...I would either have to bore the wheels out or use hub-centric wheel spacers.

Couldn’t find anyone locally to bore out the wheels...so went online to find 10mm, 12mm, or 15mm hub centric spacers. Finally found some 15mm spacers and 42mm extended bolts. Got all that stuff back in September and was just waiting for the fall temps to fall to where its consistently below 45° F...which is usually around Thanksgiving. Well, Mother Nature is being compliant and snow & cold temps are in the forecast for next week...so thought I’d take advantage of the holiday to get the wheels mounted.

Success...they fit...and personally I don’t think they look that bad for being wheels that are two generations older than the vehicle. I can also tell the difference in stopping and handling in today’s upper 30° F weather with the performance winter Yoko BluEarth tires vs the all season UHP Nitto Motivos. I can put a check in the “pro” column for the Yokos performing well in in cold/rain, cold/snow, cold/slush, cold/ice, and cold/any combo of the aforementioned.

Thanks all...and I do wonder if this wheel could have had more life beyond the e53 if BMW hadn’t changed the wheel hub size when the e70 debuted.

Again, I’m just happy I could put them to use and not just chuck ‘em in the shed to collect dust.

Garage List
Wheel Fitment

So I have a set of 4ea. 18in. E70 wheels that I use for my winter setup on my older 2005 E53. I use hubcentric rings because the E70 bore is larger. I am looking at picking up a 2018 X5 35d. After reading this post, it sounds like I will/might be able to continue to use my e70 wheels and Nokian snows on the 2018 F15. Is this a pretty common swap for these newer X5's and are there any known issues with offset. Thanks in advance.....

not to hijack your thread but which Pirelli run flats did you have mounted and what did you not like about them? Do you not like any run flats or was there something specific about those Pirelli run flats that you didn’t like?

The e70 & f15 X5 share the same wheel specs. If you go to one of the online part database sites…you can get the specs of the e70 wheels you have (width/diameter/offset) and compare it to the 18” wheels used on the f15. You’ll see that the e70 specs are probably the same as the f15…if not, they’ll be pretty darn close to each other.

Unfortunately I don’t remember what model Pirelli tires they were. They came on the vehicle when I purchased the vehicle. They were pretty much near the end of their life (5-6 yrs old) with 70k+ miles on them. But those Pirellis’ dynamics where similar to the run flats that were on my f06 650ix GC that I replaced with regular non run flat tires, too. The two run flat tires that I’ve encountered have both been louder and more harsh of a ride than the non run flats that I replaced them with.

And the non run flat tires that I’ve swapped to aren’t even the high end tires. I went with 2nd tier brand all season tires (both vehicles have a dedicated winter set-up)…I have Toyo Extensa HP II tires on the f06…and the f15 has Nitto Motivos mounted.

EDIT: I tried to go back to some old images of when the Pirellis were still mounted…but I couldn’t find an image clear enough that indicated what model Pirelli they were. The best I could find was the pic below…once blown up…you can see “PIRELLI” but not the model. On some of the other old pics…I could make out the tire sizes (275/40/20 & 315/35/20)…but the model wasn’t clear or visible.
