Car left running inadvertently after locking and leaving

My friend has a 2016 X5. Sometimes he leaves engine running by mistake, exits and locks it. Annoying. Is there a setting to say kill engine upon leaving car and locking it?

Horn will sound once you lock it when the engine is still running. That should be enough of a heads up.

Otherwise there’s no feature to kill ignition upon exit.

Ditto NYC...I was going to suggest the same thing. Hopefully they have this version of iDrive...have him go into iDrive -->SETTINGS-->Doors & Keys and then scroll down to the selection for TURN OFF AFTER OPENING DOOR. If his version doesn't have the turn off after door opens feature...look for the one that blows the horn if the engine is left running.

A muffler delete would solve the problem..

If you still have BMW Connected Drive, you can unlock the doors from your smart phone.

He's not seeing that 'turn off' option. Does it apply to 2016 models? Or does he need software update? In what section is the blow horn option?

I hate to ask this but.... what did your friend do before when cars didn’t remind that the motor was still running?

Maybe he had some type of "kill switch" attached to him like a treadmill... When he exited and forgot to turn off the vehicle, the cord would cut the power?

I believed the image in my post above is for the NBT/EVO which I think is iDrive5 or 6.

I’ll have to check...I might be conflating some BimmerCode coding with what’s available in iDrive.

EDIT: yep...looks like I conflated aftermarket coding with iDrive selections. You can see in the pic below from Bimmercode...that it is something you can do with their app

I love this feature. Lets me keep my dog in the vehicle in summer or winter and not have to worry about doing the double key shuffle or leaving unlocked.
