X5 Diesel Reliability
Hey,
I have an x5 diesel and personally love it- trying to figure out why everyone is so scared of them over 100k miles- they can't be THAT bad, can they !? |

I also question the many on here selling their cars with what I call minimal miles <100k diesel or gas. I bought an F15 based on past experience with BMW and the fantastic reliability I have had. Hopefully I ddnt jinx myself with them. With that said, I would venture to guess some of the issues are self inflicted. Been on this forum for under a month and some stuff I have read has me scratching my head |

I had an E70 diesel before my F15 and around the 130K mark I started to experience emissions issues around the DPF. I got the truck with 54K on the clock. My '15 F15 was acquired with 23K on the odo and has been smooth as a top. I believe it all comes down to how you maintain and use the vehicle. |

Historically 100k has been a milestone beyond which cars were considered scrap, so with the related drop in value any repair costs now seem huge. Cars with ths mileage are often owned by 2nd or 3rd owners who couldn't afford new, so maintenance is also often deferred beyond reasonable and results in bigger expenses that they can't afford, at least easily, hence the sentiment.

extremely reliable and awesome...the fuel consumption on it is also unreal...compared to my ex-X1 (gas), this big brother consumes even less!
And I don't even want to get started on the monstrous torque! a year ago, a Subaru WRX made an attempt and speed past me via reckless driving and cut in front of me while cornering a trailer truck...and we were about to flip into the middle access (ditch)...the b@sTaRd thought he could get away with it...I snapped it and while he was flooring it, I got him after 5-6 seconds,...cut in front of him...slowed him down...(another car helped me and blocked him from the side)...we got his licence and reported it to the police...he was wasted. This thing can move! On the side note, after 2 1/2 years, I only have less than 18,000 miles on it, as we use this car occasionally. So I can not speak to the durability after 100K yet (probably never will...lol). But one thing I can say is that the other concern which a lot of people may have-even till date- is Diesel & Winter mis-concept! A Diesel is not as a good performer in winter than gasoline variant. THAT IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE ANYMORE! Just wanted to put it out there that that conversation is a thing of the past. There's nothing left of that topic and these new machines don't mind the cold...even the Canadian cold! Last edited by Shaw; 11-27-2018 at 12:26 PM.. |

One of my colleagues at work had about 180,000 on his E70 diesel before he traded it in. Basically no issues with the motor up until that point, but it needed some expensive fuel injector work so he traded it in (for a Highlander of all things!).

I am at 50K miles and so far-so good. BMW diesel seems to be reliable, got few friends in Europe with 150K+ kilometers on their cars and no major issues.I am planning to keep mine as long as possible.

I have a F15 Diesel and am at ~120k/miles now or 200k/km in 3 years... Car runs fine no problems, except the usual, that I had issues with the emissions system at around 75k/miles... but now that I got that deleted I hope I'm fine for quite some time... This car needs to get me to 500k/miles lol

15' 35d. 45,000 km got a CEL last week for
"wrong fluid added" meaning DEF. both NOX sensors replaced. Driven it maybe 500km since. No issues. Other than that, I have 0 complaints with the diesel. Coming up on 1 year or ownership in January. It's not noisy. It's torquey. And IMO an overall great ride. Plan to keep this 10 years so you will get a high mile report from me. We( my wife) put about 20,000km on it this year. And she loves it. Great kid hauler too. Just debating whether to tune it once the warranty is up in April.

i will double check but i had all scheduled maintenance done at the dealer .
to me, the car is not worth it. either go for a lexus RX and be boring, or spend the extra money on a cayenne. the car is great but it depreciates like a rock, and if there will be service bills like this, it's just simply not worth the extra cost for the driving pleasure that you get out of it. not trying to be tough on this brand because i have loved BMWS since i was a 14 year old kid but they have just become ridiculous- even the service manager is saying to stay away i either need to sell at a massive depreciation loss, buy extended warranty, or pray that in the next 80k miles it does not require 25k in maintenance |

I was in similar boat several months ago and listen to this - I had a deposit on a lovely, packed with options Cayenne S. But - following my painful Stockholm syndrome with my N54 335i, somehow modified I decided to check what's what in detail, so after few phone calls I ended up in front of a service manager in Porsche dealership. Picture he painted - along with others - made me get a fully loaded F15 M50d, because it's a bargain to maintain when compared to Cayenne. I got a bit older, so I got a bit smarter this time - I keep the M50d stock for a change. 380 HP and 740 Nm is enough for a weekend family hauler.

What I would do is to stay away from BMW Service department and do as much preventative maintenance yourself as possible : filters, fluids, basic suspension parts etc. If you cannot DIY, spend some time to research a reputable garage that fixes/repair BMW ONLY. BMW could last you a very long time however they need to be 'babied' in terms of preventative maintenance. Do not follow 10k oil changes mantra or whatever is by the book. |

I guess if you focus on the engine/drivetrain, diesels are probably one of the more reliable derivatives in the BMW stable (after the 20d debacle of the early 2000s).
They will still suffer from the usual assorted BMW maladies which are not cheap to fix unless using indies/wrenching yourself. |
