Sell or fix?

I am debating if I should try to refresh my car or just sell it and get a new one.

It's nicely equipped 2015 X5 35D with ~74k miles and 50i upgraded brakes. Silver over black leather, M sport, comfort seats, 4 zone climate, head up display, HK sound, 469 wheels, Comfort Access, Light Package, Driving Assistant, Surround View, and few other bits .

I feel that suspension needs to be refreshed. There is bit more bounce than I recall, so it could be shocks, which does not surprise me one bit. (~$650)

There is also an occasional rough shift (jerk) under full throttle - like the whole drivetrain has a bit of slack in it. I am guessing mounts will need to be refreshed (transmission, engine, transfer case). There is no transmission slippage. The feeling is as if a mount is bad. There are no codes or anything. (~$600)
By the looks of it, it seems like the valve cover gasket is starting to leak as well. Just slight moisture. (I am estimating ~$1000 at the shop)
Transmission and coolant needs to be flushed. I got the materials already (new pan, oils and coolant), but don't have much time to get it done. (cost is my time + tool for coolant flush or $300 at the shop just for coolant flush)

Other than items listed above, there is nothing else wrong with it.

So, should I dump $2k into it, or trade it and get something with less miles / newer?

Hi there,
Depends if you really like to keep your car long term, than spending $2k in repairs isn't that bad. I have '15 X5d too however I want to keep it for a long time so if anything needs to be done, I don't mind fixing/replacing it myself.

On the other note, if you like to have your car newer with latest technology etc, then trading it in is a way to go for you. Do some research though since some of the newer BMW come out with a lot of issues already..

A bit more bounce? Slight moisture? You're really looking for excuses to buy a new ride. Lol

Technology is not an issue as much. It would be nice to have adaptive cruise. I am also not concerned about 2k as much. It's just finding time to do the work without wife killing me. I got twins on the way, so I might need 3rd row seat, otherwise it will be very tight with 3 kids in the back.

I love the car very much and it would make me very very sad to see it go. The new X5 is very nice, but...

It took me 6 months to find this one, so finding something comparable... There is not much that excites me that is available out there.

Those are all maintenance issues and not too bad to fix. If you like the vehicle (and especially if it's paid off), I'd fix it and drive it another 75k.

If you still owe on it, might be a decent time to trade up to a 3rd row? Will definitely take some time to find the right one though, and you'll be extending your payments.

I am not letting my 2014 go any time soon, just don't see a reason why. Everything you mentioned are minor maintenance items, and it sounds like you have the car you like so why bother? To me it sounds like you just trying to find a reason to get a different car. What do you have in mind?

Those $650 shocks replacement probably will last you another 75k miles, same for the mounts. I would not even bother with slight moisture over valve cover...Typical issue with N57 imo.. I have the same thing. Replaced PCV hose and membrane valve breather that should help a bit.

I wish BMW sold new X5 or X7 with diesel engine here in the US..but until then, I'm holding on tight to my 35d

I'll probably keep my 2015 for a very long time, unless I see a really good deal on an X7.

I've been giving a lot of thought to that question. I am not impressed with anything else out there. The only other newer SUV that got my attention is the new X5. I looked into (all new) Audi Q7, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Acura MDX.

Any suggestions on what I should also consider?

True that. I am huge fan of the diesel, so finding one will be tricky. Maybe I should just up the engine to V8.

Apparently, they offered the new 5 and 7 series with a diesel for one year only. Talk about the uniqorn.

I wish they were offering in the new X5 in diesel too. That would be super awesome. That's why it's so hard to give up on this one. But then again, the new B58 engine is rather awesome.

Well that's exactly what I'm thinking, my problem is that I don't like the G05 exterior, it is very nice inside but outside is just meh. F15 is absolutely beautiful and I am not aware of any other diesel alternative right now, except you can find a diesel Porsche Cayenne. Everything is rolling into the electric route so this is my reason to keep my F15 as long as I can.

^^ This!!!

The new interior feels nice, but that gauge cluster is terrible....ugh. When I heard the diesels were not welcomed in the US, I opted to buy out my F15d at lease end.
