Gremlim?

I noticed the date was wrong so I reset it. Next day the month was wrong. Reset. Next day the month and day were wrong; reset. Interesting to see what happens tomorrow.
Got a warning chime and on the HUD that the adaptive headlights aren’t working.
Of course when shut the engine off and restart it goes away. This has happened a few times.
2016 X5 with 40k miles.
Deciding whether to keep the car or trade in on 2022 X5 or Lincoln Aviator.

When was the last time you changed the 12v battery(s)? You can test the battery or if you have a battery tender, give it a go overnight.

The battery is original.
I did test with my battery tender. The large battery was in the red in the morning but charged to green within a few hours. The other smaller battery took longer.
I tested it when it was red by driving for a while and when I got home I hooked it up and got a flashing green and solid green within minutes.

In the morning they are red. If charged for an hour it goes green. This is using a battery tender junior for motorcycles.

Are you charging the battery with the tender directly on the batteries in the back? I think the way you're supposed to charge them is from the connection under the hood so that the electronics controls how it recharges through the system (forgive me if I'm wrong, still learning BMW things, hah).

The best way to test the batteries is supposed to be under load, so while the car is on. I haven't had any luck testing like that, it said my batteries were fine but my aux wasn't after I went to the dealer. With that said, I'm not great at testing car batteries. I'm sure someone has a sure fire way to do it.

The original batteries are 5-6 years old at this point and around that time when they need to get changed out. I've had to replace my aux battery (the smaller one) last year. I do know that these cars start to get all glitchy when the batteries start to run down.

Not sure what red means, but it sounds like your batteries aren't good.

The positive connection under the hood goes directly to the main battery.

Good to know about the connection under the hood. I’ll have to look. Wow. So much easier under the hood. Ok so first thing this morning after sitting all I night I plugged in the battery tender. The light is red which means needs charging.

Most auto parts stores can load test batteries. I wouldn't trust a battery tender indicator lights... especially one designed for much smaller motorcycle batteries.

Having said that, when it comes to car batteries, whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt.

I would replace them if they are original to the car thus 5+ years old. Modern BMWs are battery hogs.

It's red again the day after charging? Definitely go to an autoparts store and have them load test, sounds like the battery is toast. Also, you'll need to code the battery to your car. The auto parts store might be able to do that but they might have a small extra charge.

Also, I'd highly suggest buying a ctek battery charger. It'll work with our AGM 12v batteries. They go on sale and you can sometimes find them used - I picked mine up pretty cheap with an amazon warehouse sale (extra 20% off) - was practically new and was missing 1 rubber foot.

2016 model year. Replacing both of those batteries would be my first order of business. Clear codes and see if anything comes back.

That said, the Aviators are very nice if you don't care about a sporty ride. We've been looking at Lincoln and some Cadillac offerings lately because we need a third row in the not so distant future.

Aren't Motorcycle batteries 6 volt vs. the car's 12 volt? Is the bt junior capable of detecting volts?

While I think a battery replacement is imminent, you may be able to buy time if you get a battery charger with rejuvenation capabilities, like CTEK. Run it through a cycle to see if you can desuflate the internals and breathe some life back into it.

As others mentioned, you definitely want to charge using the post terminals under the hood, not at the battery. This allows the car's brain to account for the charge and update the stored stats of the battery. It uses this later to determine how much to charge to apply while in use.

Modern motorcycles are 12v. I second the suggestion to get a good battery conditioner/monitor like CTEK. I paid extra for that does 12v supply also which has come in handy more than once when checking things like bulbs etc.

I would just replace the batteries.
You can see the manufacture date stamped on the negative terminal.

Update.
My bad re the date not holding correctly.
I inadvertently changed it to day/ month/ year so the first number was changing every day!
Changed it yesterday NO ISSUES.
I’ve used my deltran battery tender junior 12v on other cars. Works fine just slower.
Use stop/ start function and all works well.
