IDrive controller get really hot!

Does anybody else notice this? I have a 2017 3.0 and at times the controller gets really hot after about an hour of driving. At first I thought it was the sun beaming down on that area but its only the controller.

Mine would get warm in longer drive, but not hot.

Can’t say that I experience with my iDrive controller; however, next time I do a drive for an hour or so will make a point to take notice.

Hot may be too extreme but it’s def a tad bit more than warm. I guess it’s normal then

Here in Houston, the iDrive controller has gotten soo hot at times, I'll need to grab a napkin or rag to use it, but its definitely due to the sun

I knew I wasn’t going crazy... It just doesn’t seem right.

Why doesn’t the buttons or shifter get as hot, they all seem to be made of the same material

Angle and larger surface area are the only reasons I can think of. But those get hot as well, just not as much.

The vent for the rear air/heat runs under the Idrive controller. If the rear seat vents are on high heat, that could be contributing. Check and see. If it's on high, turn them off or turn them down and see if that helps.

A while ago I posted an issue of my controller getting freezing cold. Someone queued me in on this. I checked and sure enough the air was on super cold in the back. I adjusted it to off and my controller warmed back up.

I have a 2017 7 series, and the Idrive knob gets soooo hot you cant touch it. And it happens on a 10 minute drive in the morning. After feeling how hot the button gets, I felt the passenger side of the console, and its BLODDY hot my friends. I dont think this is from the sun at all. Anybody have ideas ?

If you live in a state that gets very hot temperatures, I recommend getting your whole windshield tinted clear with a tint that blocks out most if not all UV rays. It truly makes a difference 🤙🏽
