Well, if you want to replace would absolutely suggest OEM especially with the packages you list. HUD requires a certain windshield, and would be hesitant to go with anything but OEM.

In the interim, would suggest a chip repair kit (rain-X sells a good one), which will make the damage less visible, and less likely to spread.

I think you must use OEM windshield for the HUD to display properly. Did you talk to your local auto class shop to see if they can fix it (fill it?).

Most insurance policies will provide repair (fill the chips/cracks) of the windshield for free. I've looked into an OEM replacement. It sure isn't cheap!

Aftermarket glass is fine, however I'd personally prefer oem. Price wise, aftermarket is about $475 installed, oem through the dealer is about $2100 installed.

I would ask bmw dealer in your area who they use for chip or replacement. Factory unit for sure with the options you have on the x5.

Looks like the bottom edge? I'd probably have the chip repaired which would make it less noticeable. Unless you can see it a lot.

I've used the Rain X kit and it works great. I can't even see where the damage was.

This.
A good windshield repair company can repair that and you won’t even be able to see it. It’s also free.99 with most insurance companies/coverage.
I’ve had over 20 chips (many worse than that) and never paid for one.

Yup. It definitely helped me on a few occasions.

Also it hasn't started to web out yet, that can definitely be filled and as Violator stated you won't even notice it.

I have a small crack on mine. Noticed it after we bought it. I just ordered the rain x crack fix kit. Let's see how it works out. It's very small, I was gonna leave it alone, but for 10 bucks....

Yep. If you replace it it can only be OE glass due to cameras, HUD, etc.
You’re lucky it’s not in your field of view.

Get it filled. I used Safelite. They come and do it onsite. Insurance paid for it. You want to get it now before it spreads.

There are quality aftermarket windshields out there, however, the seal with never be the same as original. I know there's one for the F15 that's actually produced by the same manufacturer as OEM. There's no way that $475 includes installation of a HUD compatible windshield with RLS and KAFAS re-calibration.

I'd get it filled. I'd rather not break the factory seals on the windshield.

That isn't true at all. The seal is determined by the install quality, not the glass quality. There is lesser quality glass, just like a cheap diamond may not be as clear or bright as an expensive one, but as far as fitment and seal, that's all the installer. Having an oem piece of glass doesn't magically guarantee perfect seal and fit if the installer is still an incompetent moron.

For what it's worth, I prefer oem glass as well, and considering how ocd I am about my vehicles, I can notice slight imperfections in aftermarket glass, but unless it's a defective windshield, they all fit and seal.

I didn't claim that the seal has anything to do with the glass quality, OEM or aftermarket. Let me rephrase - you are taking a risk that the seal will not be the same as factory.
