Painted Reflector
I need your guys input on these on the painted reflector.
I know that most forum members has changed the front reflector, but I haven't seen anyone done the rear. So, let's do a poll.

I'm definitely going to do the front, like I have with the last two cars I've owned. That amber/orange color is just obnoxious and doesn't go with any paint color or body style. It never looks right, on any car. Just another example of US regulations that suck the life out of car enthusiasts.
I don't have any problem with the rear. Red goes with more colors, goes with the tail lights, and don't really look that out of place.

I always do the front. Did on my E46, e92, f10 and will on my f15 x5. The rears I did on my f10. They looked good, but I think it's because the color matched well. My f10 was AW. The x5 will be carbon black, so I'm on the fence of doing the rears. I'll have to see once the car gets here.

I used to think that I'd never do painted reflectors but this time I took a chance and did both front & rear. Honestly I think it's a very clean look and worth the effort. It's easy to swap out the rears but much more difficult to do the fronts.

So, if the orange reflector in the front is a US regulation as MysticBlue mentioned what happens if you change it or paint it and get pulled over bythe police? Can they give you a ticket for that? How about if you get into an accident? Could that cause issues with your car insurance?
BTW, forthose who changed it, whatdid you do? Got them painted or replaced them? |

The police and insurance company may give you trouble for it. But, police usually never give a trouble with that small piece. Function wise, with or without it, it don't matter. Most new cars have side blinker on the mirrors, it seems like it still not visible enough to the other driver. How about that small reflector? Do you think it will do the job?

To answer whether it is painted or replaced.
Supposedly you can always take yours off and get it painted at your local bodyshop or yourself. But, the easiest is, to buy the painted one and just replace it. Because it is only held-on by a double side tape, and usually it is only a one time use. I am planning to get a few set painted.

If it's like most other recent BMW's (e92, F10. etc) it's just remove a few wheel well liner 8mm screws, pull it out of the way, heat up the stock reflector with a heat gun and pop it off. Clean the area with some alcohol, put the new painted reflector on with the included double sided tape and button the liner back up.
I'll find out tomorrow when I pick up my X5.... let me know if you need any help! |

I don't have a complete instruction yet, but you will need to remove and replace the blind rivet that is holding up the flares in order to access the front reflector.
I got a few set of AW being painted. Should be ready by next week, and I will do the DIY instruction on them, together with the front grill trim DIY.

Finally able to spare my time to pick up the painted reflectors.
The bodyshop only will take my order with a minimum of 5 sets in 1 color. So with that, I have 5 sets being painted AW, with 1 set for myself, I will have 4 sets of spares. If any of you with AW that need a pair, let me know. Oh, picture and DIY soon.

r33 - looking forward to your DIY as I just ordered a blue set for my 'just ordered' X5. Installation on my '14 F10 was a piece of cake, but I'm hearing the F15 may prove to be more difficult due to the rivet. Looking forward to hearing your feedback.
Thanks! |
