Note it's a new Steptronic unit.Should be as fast as the DCT. I kinda like the automatic cos the DCT sounds like a broken clutch at low speed.Owners would know it.
Finally a 4-wheel drive M! This will be a future feature in the M and M-Perf lineup.

kinda sad that it no longer shares an engine with the M5. I was hoping for same M5 engine just with 600hp and better mileage.

Smaller displacement will invariably mean slightly more turbo-lag. unless they performed magic. The m5 already had way too much lag.

Still i guess this might just be my next car. A selling point for the new M5 (old x5m) over audis was that it had more displacement. This engine just looks like an RS7/S8 engine clone…

Bravo BMW, nice job on both vehicles. Disappointed about the auto tranny, DCT would have been a game changer in the SUV world. But still two fantastic looking and extremely capable performance machines.

Beginning of the end for DCT? These new ZF8s (and the new GM 8spd, now in the Stingray) are seeing a lot of high performance duty.

Also- this is just a tuned version of the regular 50i engine, right? Curious to hear (from someone who has driven both) the difference in performance between this and a 5.0i with M Sport and DHP (and a tune).

This is just Sick! Does the 8 speed auto come with P gear though? Or is it a revised one that is similar to a DCT?(which doesn't have P)

Love the fact that they have the M-DCT shifter, ZF-8 Step notwithstanding. I wouldn't knock the Step before trying since it probably better suits the character of these brutes than the DCT. I thought I would have preferred the X5 but in M guise the X6 looks miles ahead, aesthetically. The rear of the '5 brings to mind the back view of a crouching pet on the public road about to drop a thing you'd be obligated to pick up and trash. Other than that, both look very well done. The seats in particular, and the interior generally, are spectacular!

Clearly they are struggling with the design direction. This could have turned out much better esthetically. I bet real life pics will be nasty.

I'm hoping the brakes will be retrofitable on to my current X5M. Hmmm...
