It looks like the BMW part numbers have changed:

36-11-2-349-640 (front)
36-11-2-349-641 (rear)

I'm not sure if these are the same dark colored wheels as mine. They are 611M, but are described as "polished". They have the same Pirelli winter tires as mine. I'm told BMW is out of stock and won't have more until maybe the end of September.

Gotcha. Thanks for the update. Fingers crossed they are dark like yours. Those are perfect for winter. I'll check back with the dealer later in September. Hopefully they make another batch.

When thinking about this very thing, living in the Northern Chicago area, I was considering two different things:

1) Possible get a 20" set from an F15 as I had heard they would fit perfectly and have these as a dedicated set of winter tires.

2) Go with these tires I found at Tire Rack and have them mounted on my factory 21" wheels.

Thoughts.....?

Same question. I asked at the BMW dealership and the response was less that enthusiastic about getting a set of OEM 20" rims for a winter set up.

Has anyone found any third party making a 20" wheel for the X5M/X6M?

I'd like to think of options while it's still warm out and perhaps before a true run on available supply/options. We all know the options will dwindle the moment the first snowflake lands.

I just picked up my X5m yesterday and am currently looking for winter wheels and tires. Anyone had any luck getting these?

The black 20" setup would look great on my truck. Hopefully I can find a set.

if you find any good black wheels in the 20" - please share - I'm looking for the same set-up for the winter; My dealer said that the winter set-up isn't out yet but would be out in the next few months. he has assured me that BMW wouldn't stiff their customers by not having enough wheels available for everyone to get them.

I just got quoted about $5500 for a set by my dealer (I am in Canada); it splits out to about half for wheels and half for tires (mounted and balanced).

Ive had some trouble trying to track down the spec'd Pirelli Scorpions 285/40R20....most online retailers either dont list them or have them listed as unavailable.

I have found the Scorpion Winter 275/40R20 at a few places and it is generally a fair bit cheaper too, however, the load rating on those is 106 vs the spec'd 108 (and the 108 on the stock summers). I know the short-hand response is generally don't go to a tire with a lower load rating than OE, but, I did the math and it seems to be permissible.

Any opinions on whether this is a bad idea or not? Ill list all of my numbers below for reference.

Size comparison

Stock Size -> Proposed Size = Difference%
285/35R21 -> 275/40R20 = 0.7%
325/30R21 -> 275/40R20 = 0.1%

The sizing seems to be well matched.

Load Rating

The load rating for the front tires wont matter since the scorpions have a higher load rating than the OE tires. The comparison for the rears is as follows.

Max load on rear axle = 1631kg
Max gross weight = 2971kg or 743kg per wheel
OE recommended rear inflation pressure = 36 psi
OE Tires = Michelin PSS with XL designation and 108 load rating

Load rating 108@36psi = 885kg * 0.91 = 805kg per rear tire (OE spec)

It seems to me that the OE recommended inflation is based on the gross weight and speed rather than strictly on max load per axle. I should also note that for speeds >160kph the recommended inflation pressure is 44 psi. Considering this is a comparison for winter tires, I believe using the lower numbers should be acceptable as I dont think it is likely that I will be faster than 120-130 in winter.

Load rating 106@36psi = 841kg * 0.91 = 765kg
Load rating 106@39psi = 902kg * 0.91 = 821kg

Thus, I would think that so long as I keep the rear tires inflated to 39 psi, I should have the same load bearing capacity as the OE spec despite having a tire that has a derated load index.

That seems to make sense to me....am I missing something?

Notes:
1. I have read in a few places that when passenger vehicle tires are used on SUV's (i.e. any tire that does not explicitly start with LT before the sizing), the load rating should be reduced by 10% to compensate for the higher center of gravity and the increased likelyhood of carrying cargo. That is why all of the load figures are multiplied by 0.91.

2. In the owners manual under the recommended tire pressures, the sized winter set (285/40R20 108) has a recommended rear pressure of 31 psi. I assume they have done this to allow the winter tire to maintain more contact with the road for better traction, however, this would seem to throw the very relevance of the load rating into question (unless, I suppose, it is highly dependant on expected speed and ambient temperature). Anyone have any opinions on this?

And now to find wheels.......

I was just told that there aren't any BMW dealers in the U.S. who have these in stock, BUT there are 18 sets available in Germany. Try calling your BMW parts department and have them order you a set. Shipping should take 1-2 weeks.

36-11-2-349-640 (front)
36-11-2-349-641 (rear)

Good luck!

In Canada ... here's the Part #'s for the 611M (20") Winter Tire + Rim Package:

Front: 36-11-2-289-835
 Rear: 36-11-2-289-836

Double checked Part #'s with two different dealers.

None of the dealers can confirm the colour of the 611M Winter Rims eventhough AwesomeM3's pic are dark grey.

It seems the poster above was correct. The part numbers have since changed and the new wheels are polished. Mine were pending and then cancelled and it said call BMW NA. When my dealer called they gave new part numbers and there are none in the US but many units sitting in the Germany warehouse. It seems they will be here in the next few weeks.

Peace,
Noushy

Interesting posts. They completely conflict with what I've learned in the past two days. Here's what I learned first hand:

A bulletin just came out yesterday for the dealerships that shows the part numbers for the winter tire sets for these vehicles is the same as last season (spring), and will be available for purchase in the next few weeks. ETK shows the part numbers for the rims alone used in making these sets as being:

front: 36-11-2-284-654 (only for winter tires)
rear:36-11-2-284-655 (only for winter tires)

Part numbers for the whole package being:

front: 36-11-2-365-424
rear: 36-11-2-365-425

The BMW ETK system lists two part numbers, and types for the 611M rim, the same style rim used in making these sets. One is listed as "only for winter tires," and the other as two toned (polished faces, grey background). One style of this rim, assumable to be the dark grey, is listed as "only for winter tires."

As of a few weeks ago, a warehouse in Germany had a stockpile of the dark grey 611M rims. I was asked by my parts guy if I wanted to pay the expense of ordering just the dark grey rims, and put my own tires on them, or if I wanted to wait and see if BMW used them in these year's winter tire sets. I elected to wait for the bulletin for this season's winter tire packages to come out, which is the one I mentioned in the beginning of this post.

My parts guy is ordering me a set as soon as they are available to be ordered, which should be end of this month.

I'm just trying to get winter tires + rims from my BMW dealer here in Austria - and I'm getting angry more and more:
1) the standard 21'' rims (612 M) are not available - they told me that no sets are available currently throughout Europe
2) the 20'' 611 M are just offered with 285 all around - no 20'' option for 275/315 as it is available for the normal F16
so I contacted ACSchitzer & Hamann - will see if they can help out...

again spoken with my dealer - the 612M will not be available before earliest December - which is naturally too late - especially in Austria where we might get a lot of snow...

the 20'' rims with all 285 are not really an option for me - I think the car needs tires >300

so I might order new 612Ms, go for Pirelli Scorpion Ice/Snow Runflat in 285/35/21 and 325/30/21 and mount them on the original rims and remount the summer tires on the new 612Ms whenever they will be delivered...
But still waiting for ACS and Hamann for their offers...

My bet is on better winter traction, as to why BMW chose narrower tires for all 4 wheels. Narrower tires with more sidewall get much better traction in the snow. Since the purpose of these tires is for traction, and not necessarily for aesthetics, it would make sense to choose the option that will provide the best overall performance.

I'd rather have narrower rims/tires that perform better, than ones that look better, and perform worse. It would suck to slide into something/someone, or get stuck somewhere, because I chose aesthetics over function.

Hi UrbanExtant,

totally agreed -always safety first - but I had 275/40R20 and 315/35R20 Pirellis on my previous X6M50D and was totally satisfied with it - even when driving in "deepest" winter no problem at all for 3 years - that's why I decided to go with this tire set...
And BMW is also offering above mentioned dimensions for the F16 as winter set - why they don't offer it for F85/F86 I have no idea...

I'm planning on going with 21" Pirelli Ice and snow run flats on the stock wheels as well. I'm a little concerned about putting run flat tires on a car tuned for non run flats. Hopefully the ride won't be effected. What are your thoughts?

You will probably be in for a pretty hard ride. I would be hesitant to run 21" winters as you will probably have to run a 30 profile tire. That short of a sidewall (especially with run flats) is going to result in a very hard tire which isnt something you usually want on uneven roads (i.e. roads covered in snow and/or ice).

so for the 21'' 612M with 325/30/21 winter tires there are just 2 options (at least I didn't find anything else)
Pirelli run flats (as written above - had it for 3 years and was satisfied...)
Yokohama no run flats (never had ones - does anyone have experience with Yokohama winter tires?)

I was thinking of the ICE/Snow tires for the stock 21" 612M wheels, but have been leaning towards the 611M Winter package from BMW with the 285's.

Cost wise I think the new full set will be ~$3K more, but I'm going with BMW and what they feel is the 'correct' winter setup for our cars.

With that said, having another vehicle for the really bad winter days, the ~$1600.00 for just the winter tires could make more sense cost wise.

'Usually' the roads get cleaned up pretty good after bad weather so I haven't decided yet if it's worth the ~$4k+ for the full winter set.
