Engine Oil Level Low - Add 1 quart

Hello,

Got an engine oil level low message on 2017 X5M- add 1 quart as soon as possible. Went to local dealer and was attended to by service manager himself. He said they have been notified by BMW that when the V8's give an add 1 quart oil for top up they should in fact add 2. Despite feeling it would be better to just add 1 quart at a time, trusted him and went ahead with adding the 2 quarts in one go.

Am now a little worried however about having possibly overfilled and may lose some sleep over this so any information about what to think about this scenario would be welcome. Has anyone else gotten the memo about add 2 if it asks for 1? Does the idrive check oil gauge freak out and give a max warning message for too much oil or does it quietly let you choke it to destruction?

Thoughts, views, facts, + info please!

Pretty sure it's fine. Warning comes up when oil is about half depleted(around 4 qts). You can always check your engine oil level by going to vehicle status.

thanks for the reply! With the oil measurement the main segment and min segment are fully highlighted as green and up to the max marker. The upper segment above max is not highlighted which would sound like its an open and shut case of not being too full but problem is have read too many forum posts about not being able to trust the digital oil measurement and it taking a few days sometimes to give an accurate reading at which point could have already driven a few hundred miles/kms.

This recently happened to my X5M also. when I pulled over to check oil level, which I do frequently, it was showing oil level a little below half. I went to BMW service the next day and they added 1 quart. When they were done I drove for awhile and pulled over to check oil level and it was full. If you took 2 quarts of oil perhaps your oil indicator message was late. If I would have added 2 quarts without checking I would have been way over full.

what happened is after getting the warning was still 25 km from home and thought it may be a gauge error that would be gone the next day. Next day after starting the car it was still there showing up immediately. After driving for 20 mins stopped and did the measurement which showed as min (only lowest small segment was green). Then another 15 km and 25 min later reached dealer and they measured again and same min result. Then the 2 got added

Mine needs one quart every 7,500 miles. Always just before an oil change.

well I don't mind if the car burns up oil and needs a refill - main concern now is assessing possible damage from the 2 quart top up drinking session. Was it too much and would it warn me if it was?

Yes.

You'll receive a message from the iDrive if you've added too much oil.

For peace of mind do a manual check. Get the engine to operating temperature. Park it in neutral with the park brake on, on level ground, engine running. Go to Vehicle Status. Toggle over to "Measure Engine Oil Level". Click that and it will slightly rev the rpm for a couple of minutes and do a level check. Then you'll know for sure.

Haha yes have been doing that, measured once 5 mins after dealer added the oil / 35 mins later at home / then the next day 30 mins after start and then 2 hrs and 65 kms after that / and then the next day (today) 3 times throughout the day during which time drove 250 kms.

It has been giving the same measure: max but with the segment above max not highlighted. Just have also become paranoid because there are so many posts about the oil measurement tool being faulty / erratic and unreliable. I think it should be fine though hopefully

When you see this warning does this mean you have to take the car for service or just adding the oil is enough?

Dealer always adds two when my light goes on. I believe operating manual advises add two as well. Need to verify that though. This is where a dipstick sure would come in handy.

My '15 X6M has 72k miles and was asking for a quart every 750 miles. I traded it in. If yours is a '17 it's still under factory warranty. Pretty sure they won't overfill. Good luck

That's a bit excessive.

You should be fine. As others have said, overfill will show up when you check the oil level.

Engine Oil Level Low - Add 1 quart

I got the msg yesterday and went to dealership today. I only drove 1700 mi since 1200 mi break in. They added 1 quart right there in front of me, and then reset/remeasured oil level, which went back to green max level. It was literally like a pit stop. Free and quick. All smiles

I just added a quart as well...except it was in my garage and I did it myself, not quite like a pit stop.

My Service Advisor told me the exact same thing. Nothing to worry about.
