Windshield replacement
Hi all,
I just got my windshield replaced due to a crack going across that was growing rapidly. Local dealer is backed for weeks, so I went with a national glass company. Well, got the car back, and the HUD not displaying properly. It's barely visible even at full brightness. The HUD works fine indoors, so I drove away and didn't even noticed once I got on the road. I read my receipt and it has the glass description with the right options (F15/HUD/etc). Everything is closed until Monday, so I can't call them. Anyways, does the hud have to be calibrated or anything for new glass? I hope they didn't take me to the cleaners and put some other glass not compatible with HUD... Thanks! |

Do you have camera behind mirror (driver assist, high beam assist)? Wondering how replacement affects alignment of this as well. Have a crack that has been epoxied and am about to test it in single digits skiing next weekend.

Please let us know how this works out. I have a repaired chip that increasingly irritates me but I'm wary of replacing the screen in case I end up with similar issues (I also have HUD).

It says in the owner's manual that the windscreen has a special layer in the HUD area.

Have your insurance replace it with OEM. I have Liberty Mutual and on all of my cars they always spec OEM since they have HUD.

OEM glass or nothing with almost any HUD vehicle. OEM "equivalent" is not the same. I've put two $850 windshields in our Escalade so far thanks to the HUD factor.

Dealing with the same thing right now. I had my dealer inspect my car. The SA quoted me over $3k parts and labor. She said it cannot be repaired since my windshield is cracked (bout and inch). SA said epoxy will not stop the crack from getting bigger. I have GEICO and they authorized repair but I am going to insist they replace it for safety and request that only OEM windshield be used.. I'm hoping Geico will allow my dealer to do the repair since the camera sensors needs to be calibrated as well. I'm afraid Geico will tell me it's too expensive to have the dealer work on my car.
I read somewhere here that Safelite uses OEM BMW windshield glass. Can anyone confirm this? Thx. |

I had my windshield replaced as part of a larger repair claim. Even though the rest of the claim was serviced through a large repair shop, my insurance company requires that the windshield be serviced by a specific auto-glass place. That was a royal PITA. It probably added at least a week and a half to my repair time while my shop and the glass company argued over the windshield.
This is what it eventually came down to: "BMW says they after-market windshield won't work with her HUD. You go ahead and put it in and then take it right back out when it doesn't work. And, by the way, we'll let Allstate know that all the extra loaner car time is because of YOU." They put in BMW glass. |

Had a crack in my AMG (no HUD or anything like that) and was gonna sell the car soon so I asked the glass place (safelite) to tell insurance they didn't have anything but oem glass in stock for my car and it worked. Lol they didn't care cuz they got paid more.

Went by dealer today...
They looked at the glass and said it's OEM. Well, the service person started playing with the brightness setting on the menu trying to turn it up and move the position. Well, finally he said it's fixed. I went over to look and it was back to "normal", but we were inside, so it was dark and it was looking fine. Basically, the dimmer on the headlights was all the way down and therefore making it really dim. Well, I didn't know the dimmer also dims the HUD brightness during daytime. Today, I went out during the day and it is still not as bright as before or as my X3. I'm afraid the dealer and carglass place are both crooks. Anyway, my X3 HUD does not dim when I lower the brightness during daylight...so something is not right on the X5.
This doesn't make sense...ugh...I guess I'll try VO coding bdc_body and Kombi to see if it resets something because the dimmer scroll wheel should not be controlling the hud on daytime. |

Check your windshield to see if it's OEM. I know they told you it is. But you can check. Take a pic of the stamps/writing on the lower portion. Post them on here. The numbers can't lie or cheat you. Then at least we can help you rule that out.

I have noticed a disturbing trend where 3rd party vendors and service providers will use word play to twist the truth and make you think you are getting an authentic part. They will use phrases like "original equipment replacement" which does not have the same meaning as a Genuine BMW part. I'm not suggesting that this is the case with your glass but it is certainly something to be aware of, unfortunately the consumer has to be very diligent these days and read between the lines.

It is all about profit margins. There is typically very little markup in the Genuine BMW parts for the 3rd party vendor or service provider, whereas there is considerably more markup in the non-Genuine parts.
