Was just outside for a quick wash and noticed this curb rash. The wheel is about 6 weeks old, so it's particularly painful to see this occur. It happened sometime this week, likely from a valet in my garage as I never had the car near a curb. Would this be considered an easy fix for a wheel repair shop?

My curb rash was eight inches on my X5M and the repair guy made it look stunningly new in 25 minutes. It is just unbelievable how good they are. Don't sweat it at all. While I don't want to scrape another wheel, seeing how easy it is to fix makes me not worry as much.

sucks but easy repair for the pros. Find a good wheel guy and keep that number around. Forum probably could help find one in your area or check with your dealer - they may even has someone who comes to the dealer and does weekly repairs.

Thank you all for the replies thus far. I’m in the NYC / CT area so if anyone knows of a quality wheel repair place please let me know. The car is going in tomorrow for an S1 tune at BMW of Port Chester / Greenwich so I’ll ask them who they use for this type of repair.

I also have had good results with wheel repair. I curbed it to avoid a woman who couldn't keep her lane around a curve. It was her or the curb. I got a blow out and rash around almost half of the wheel. You'd never know it was repaired.

Yes, this should be an easy fix and less than $150. I've had my dealer repair my curbed wheels before, not on my X5M but on other BMWs They have a vendor who repairs wheels on a daily basis at the dealership.

Just to follow up here. I spoke to Proformance. They clearly know what they’re doing. Told me it would be $340 all in and they’d need the car for a week due to the complexity of the wheel and the multiple colors of paint as well as the fact that they needed a second wheel from my car to color match this one to. Service Advisor in Port Chester said it would be three days and that they outsource the work. Told me I could only do a repair twice to a wheel before it was trashed due to material being “shaved” off every time they repair it...

$340 and a week is ridiculous. I think I paid $120. The guy came and picked up my wheel and returned it next day. It was my winter set up which wasn’t mounted at the time.

I agree that I need to keep searching. At $340 it would probably make sense to just buy a new wheel and sell the curbed one (and not deal with a week without the car). Please let me know if you guys have any other recs in the tri-state area.

do these 611m and 612m wheels require clear coat after grinding, sanding and polishing the curb rash? if they do, do they use clear over the aluminum repair? do they clear coat the entire rim? i also have 2/4 wheels with curb rash and i'm thinking of getting them fixed.

I've had to repair my winter wheels twice, ironically the same rim both times.
They did a great job, it was a dealer supplied contractor and they needed the car for half a day. I bought the wheel repair insurance, so I don't know what the cost is but someone else nearby (same dealer) paid about $140. Rim looks great, don't hesitate to pull the trigger if the rash bothers you. |
