Question about Guage Cluster

Hi, everyone. I just picked up a 2018 X5. It was dealer owned and used as a demo (1,500 miles). Today was the first time I drove it at night and I noticed two things, please see the attached pictures. My first question is, why does the gauge cluster appear to have a box in the lower right hand corner? It seems like something is wrong. Second, why is the side lamp notification on? (Green icon on far left). Is there a way I can turn that off or is there a problem?

I was hoping you guys could look at the pictures and let me know if something seemed off.

Really blurry pictures but it seems you have the "bottom tier" cluster that only has the lcd screen on the bottom right.

The green light means your headlights are on.

Ultimate - yes, but I have not had a chance to go through it. I did try to find the answer on the interactive manual in the car but couldn’t find my answer.

Can you help? Does anything look wrong the “box” in the pictures is distracting and seems weird to me. As to the parking side lights, I determined that’s what the symbol meant, but don’t know why that light is on.

Maverick - what is the “bottom tier” cluster? Is that standard?

There are 3 tiers. Yours. Then the standard full LCD/partial digital 6WA (what most have) and then the full digital 6WB.

I'm assuming you're Canadian or European? Don't think your cluster is sold in the US at least not that I've seen.

We're you expecting it to look different?

I am in New Jersey. I don’t understand I feel like I got rooked or something. I assume I won’t be able to do anything about this.

I only see two pictures. Mine looks like the second one I see with the vehicle imagine in the middle (at least when the car turns on).

Ya you can swap it out. People periodically sell the 6WA and 6WB on here. Also on eBay.

And ya idk then. I've just never seen one of these clusters when I was in the market. But if you're in jersey then clearly I'm mistaken.

Not sure what you're Version is called. Maybe A1 as this eBay post suggests.

Mine is the middle picture you posted. Not sure why there is a box showing like in the picture I sent you.

? No yours is the third picture. It only has an lcd on the bottom right. The middle picture has an lcd screen across the entire bottom. See how your numbers on the speedometer and tachometer are always present? They are lcd images on the middle screen. So the screen is completely blank when the car is off.

6WA when off looks as so when off. This is not what you show in your picture.

You have the standard cluster without HUD. I have a 2017 x5 custom orderwith the same and knew this going it. My 2011 f10 also has the same cluster.

Your picture looks like a camera flash against the bottom right box making it seem like it’s on and blank, but it should be completely off with no backround light.

Thank you for the responses. I just went back out to the car and the “box” is there almost like it’s glowing (see my pics). It’s not camera flash at all. So that shouldn’t be there? If not I am going to take it to dealership.

Also, the green light (I think denoting side lights) was in even with my head lights OFF.

This is normal, you have the basic cluster version (kombi), if you don't like the way it looks update to 6WA or 6WB cluster. You might want to check this thread out:

I will turn off after some time or when you lock your car.

I guess then it might be that the digital lcd panel backlight is staying lit. Better have the dealer check it out and replace if found faulty.

Damn - I gotta say - everyone is sending me pictures of the standard gauge cluster, like I apparently have, but no one has that stupid box outlining the lcd screen. If it’s normal why is it not visible in other pictures including those that Maverick sent? As I said today was the first time I was in the car at night so I didn’t notice before.

I will never swap it. I actually like the analog but just not the box

Does anyone else have any insight into whether the issue could be a faulty LCD backlight? Disappointing since I’ve had the car for 3 days...

Pretty sure theres nothing wrong with your cluster. Its normal to see the outline of the screen even when its off as it is the only part of your cluster that is digital.

In any case if you are ever considering an upgrade I'd go with 6WB fully digital as the 6WA has small differences compared to the basic kombi. It just has an extended screen on the bottom and illuminates with white light in the day time
