misfire on cylinder 7 and 8

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Short story - so, my wife will drive a car into the ground!

2015 X5 50i

I haven't driven her X5 in months. I drove it the other day. Check engine light is on. Car has serious hesitation at initial acceleration. Almost bogs then a sudden burst. I scan it with my OBD, I can't remember the code, but it = running rich. I start looking at things, the intake boot is cracked and barely hanging on on both sides. I order and replace. Instant improvement in the way it idles and runs. Runs strong. I clear the CEL with my OBD. After about 10 miles, CEL comes back on. I scan it, no codes. I took it to Auto Zone the print out reads - Check Engine:Pass. ABS:Pass. Emission Ready: No
So there is an emissions issue.

There is a little bit of back fire at declaration.

Anyone have any ideas on my issue? No codes but def have the CEL.

Any help is appreciated:

Need the exact codes. If you are only seen like generic Pxxx codes without any info. Than you may need a better scan tool. If you have a wifi/ENET cable, for Free, you can use ISTA or MHD's (dont need tune lic to use) app to get the codes with more info.

BimmerLink with an OBD adapter is also a cost effective way to pull the real codes you need. There’s probably a stored misfire code in there somewhere.

Emissions ready could just be you haven’t completed a drive cycle since clearing everything. That’s to keep you from resetting the codes and immediately doing an emissions test to pass

For the technically challenged,
Please describe everything I would need for this Bimmerlink and OBD adapter to work.

Explain it like I'm in 3rd grade, please.
I am assuming this is not Bluetooth interfacing...

Thank you for all your replies!

1. Download and pay for bimmerlink app.
2. Purchase a wireless OBD adapter (I’m sure Bimmerlink’s website gives a list of compatible devices)
3. Plug in device into OBD port
4. Open app on phone, make sure Bluetooth is enabled
5. Once connected, choose scan or whatever equivalent they have for running diagnostics.
6. See what codes it shows, jot em down (or take a screenshot) and report back here

Just realized you have a N63, hope it’s not fuel pump. I forgot if the TIS covered 2015 X5’s. But I would not throw parts at it yet as that can get expensive really fast.

How many miles on the car and when was last time you addressed maintenance items? I would start with free stuff… like clean maf, inspecting the hoses for any cracks. The rubber hoses on these cars are specially susceptible to damage with these motors given all the extra heat, just a matter of time.

146,000.

I have tried to keep up with the maintenance pretty well.

I've changed brake fluid. Coaches rotors/pads.
Flushed coolant system. Cottage transmission fluid. I Fisher plugs 10,000 miles ago.
I know none of that would have anything to do with what's happening now.

I cleaned the mafs today. I replaced the air intake boots Thursday...

Yesterday, I got drive train malfunction light. Later just a minute, then went a easy and the rough idle cleared up.
Read the codes - nothing.

The afternoon, however, same light and a ton of codes:
C342d
C0361
P0055
C2520
C2174
C3064.

Other than I have serious problems, anyone have a Clue as to what I might be facing?

So, I've been able to update my codes and I'm hoping to get some direction.

118102 mixture too rich
118502 mixture too reach - large deviation
140810 misfire cylinder 8
140710 Missouri cylinder 7.

Is there any reason to think plugs and could packs would be the culprit?

Any insight would be helpful!

If anyone is following...

I changed the coil packs/plugs in 7and 8. Started it up, the check engine light was OFF
Still idled rough and had drive train malfunction light on. I tried using the OBD scanner I purchased, but it wouldn't connect to Bimmerlink a be second time. While messing with this, I noticed the drive train malfunction light stopped coming on when ignition was turned on. Idle seemed to smooth out a little.

I great drive it about 3 miles and it ran GREAT. No CEL or any other light. I stopped, turned it off, let it sure for 1 minute. Started it, CEL and drivetrain malfunction lights were on and I didn't think I would make it home, it was running so rough. I'm ordering another OBD adapter so I can check the codes again. Fwiw ..

Seems like your autocorrect is doing horrible job, it is hard to read your messages. Just to be clear- did your replace spark plugs 10K miles ago? Which plugs did you use? Did you ever replace coil packs, since your car is getting closer to 150K miles plugs&coils is absolute must for this engine. When you are saying your replaced coils/plugs in 7 and 8, did you get new once or you just swap them between cylinders?

You double check there's no intake leaks? Clean the maf?
Possible o2 sensor giving false readings to computer and fueling?

I did replace coil/plugs maybe 20,000 miles ago. Bosch/ngk.

Tonight, I put new coils/plugs in #7&8 cylinders. Bosch/ngk

I have checked for leaks.
Not sure if its the O2 sensor or not. I guess that's would be the next though I replace after MAF sensor. I took those out and cleaned them. I take them out while the car is running (one at a time, obviously) and there is no difference in the way the car idles...

Thanks for the response!

Is there a way I can determine if it's injectors without pulling injectors?

Which NGK plugs did you get?
Where did you purchase the NGK plugs?

Display the live data then you'll know.

Guessing and throwing parts at it inevitably ends up being more costly and often doesn't resolve the problem.

Man, at close to 150k miles I’d be leaning towards injector replacement, even if they turn out to test ok. If you have an injector leaking that can tear up your engine, big time.

I second that.. faulty injector turned into a new engine and big $$$ for me.
I would recommend you have your cylinders scoped, make sure no damage/ scoring, before you spend more money on parts.

Note, NGK spark plugs are by far the most counterfeited - never buy them from Amazon or eBay, they're guaranteed counterfeit if bought from them.
