The way I introduced my wife to the soft close doors was like "hey check out this new thing I found out on our car" and showed her soft close doors.

You close the door like normal. And for those instances where you didn't close hard enough, the latch will close the that last half of an inch. I think it's dumb to change your habit, to close the door real light.
Agreed...it's like telling someone "no no, don't touch the volume knob on the radio I have a fancy button on my steering wheel!"

If it doesn't hurt the auto close function just let people close the car door like almost every other car in the world. Seems like it is a hassle and pointless to warn every passenger.

The best is when an older ol'skool loved one gets in and you tell them, let them in, and close the door for them and they hear the door clicking and securing... then they question the technology and rely on their early-life assurances and say are you sure this door is closed-it doesn't seem closed and while looking at it, reopen it and slam it shut to ensure it closed tightly the way it's supposed to!

Soft close is very useful when you have a sleeping toddler in your car...

OMG...thanks for the laugh. I can see someone older not "trusting" technology to have securely closed the door.

But their mistrust can't be totally ridiculed since there were complaints about BMWs with soft close doors & comfort access that were doing just what the old people we're discussing feared. BMW has done a recall for doors opening while under-way: https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2...se-doors.shtml

The first time my parents were in the car, I told them about the soft-close and showed them. My mom started doing it perfectly immediately but my dad forgot all about it the next couple of times. So my mother scolded him each time and showed him how it needed to be done. The next time they were in the car, my dad held the door handle with his thumb and index finger and ever so slightly pulled the door toward himself and let go in mid-air waiting the car to close the door. Since nothing happened, he repeated the procedure and complained to mom that it was not working!

I'd like to see a true soft close system where I could try to slam the door, yet a mechanism would catch the door and close it softly.

Are the soft doors the cause of the "excess wind noise" issue? (latch not closing tightly?)

But you have to admit that when you do slam a door shut on the X5 it still sounds better than slamming a door shut on a Ford!

i just closed my door today... with my thumb in it somehow. For a split second i thought to myself, "yay, the door didn't completely close, i'll just slip out". That's when i heard the soft close mechanism go off. OWW ow ow ow ow!

And it took a few tries before comfort access would pay attention to my other hand. Yikes. Still love my X5

You can still slam it. It isn’t going to break the door mechanism.

I simply and politely tell newcomers that they "simply need to pull the door together" when closing the door.

I have had had soft close doors for over a decade on a few different cars. The general masses are completely unaware.

Let me know if you solve this. I'm trying to figure out a way to stop people from banging their f*cking shoes on the M-Sport aero skirts to knock the snow/slush off them.

The only thing I've come up with so far is to tell them to get back out and stick their foot under the rear wheel, so I can clean the tire off on their shoe. I can't catch them in time, though. By the time I hear the "clunk-clunk-clunk" it's too late. I took the precaution of having PPF applied to the whole skirts, so that seems to have helped.

I guess the "real" answer is to not give rides to dumb-fucks who don't appreciate nice things.

You rather have slush inside your car?

Yes, absolutely. I can easily clean slush up. It's water, FFS. I have several sets of mats, and I regularly launder them.

The skirts, once they're scratched up, I'm fucked. Last time I had them repainted due to tire shop damage, it was 3 days and $1800. The tire shop paid for the repair, but I lost the use of the car for 3 days.

A true no-brainer.
