How many miles are getting on your 21" wheels
Have a 2014 X5 5.0. Came with the 19inch wheels which i am not a fan of and will be retired to winter wheels.
Looking to either get the 599's (21" wheel) or the 451's (20" wheel). I've been told in going with the 21" wheel i can expect to get roughly 10,000 miles out of my tires where if I go with the 451's, i can get roughly 30,000 or so. Not sure how true that statement is in only getting 10,000 miles on a 21" wheel, but I've made wrong assumptions before... Obviously there are many factors that go into the mileage of the tire (kind of tire, how it's driven etc.) but just looking to get a rough idea from what people on here are actually experiencing and not someone's hypothetical opinion from the dealer. Other question is will there be any performance difference between the 20" and 21" wheels if they had the same exact tire on them. Appreciate all your help, feedback, suggestions and guidance! |

Fuel economy will go down, that's about it.

OP is looking for data on tread life not fuel economy.
OP, it all depends on your tire type... Summer vs All seasons... I am not certain the size of the tire will affect tread life.

Thanks all.
Should have clarified - Talking about tread life on large wheels. Was planning on going with a summer tire. I agree Kzang as it didn't make sense to me that going from a 20" to 21" rim would change my tread life from 30K miles to 10K miles of life. Just wondering if anyone has any experience here and which tire did they go with. I live in NE so pot holes aren't uncommon. I'm fearful if i go very low profile, i could easily damage the wheel. Any tire suggestions? |

I drive in the metro NYC surrounding areas and with my 20" summer RFT with 30 in the front and 35 in the rear have had zero issues with potholes so far. Of course I try to avoid as many as possible but there have been several times where I could not... my wheels are fine. I think OEM wheels have become much stronger than it used to be 5+ years ago.. There are many owners here who are rolling in 22" with non RFT all season tires without issues as well.

OP, just stick with asking about tires vs wheel size. Going up in wheel size increases your overall rolling weight/wheel, but as for the tires themselves, there's no way a definitive statement can be made regarding mileage based on diameter. You could get a hard, all-season compound tire in the larger size that would blow away a super sticky Michelin PSS tire in a smaller size. It's always a trade off so depends on what you're after.
