M50d Ownership Experiences

Hi
My first posting... please be gentle! I've just ordered an UK M50d. Spec approaching lockdown soon. I appreciate the M50d might not be available in the US, but for anyone that can help...

I'm interested to hear from others with M50d's in terms of driving and ownership experiences particularly compared to X5 E70 30d, X3 30d, both of which I've had in the past.

I've had only short experiences in an M50d so anything on the following points would also be of interest:

Driving / handling compared to a F15 30d or an X3 30d

MPG (ideally UK roads if possible)

Any other comments on the ownership of M50d

Anyone more widely, anyone using Gtechniq paint protection on their F15 - does the wheel, glass, leather protection really work?

I'm also interested in the X5M / X6 knee pads as an addition to the interior trim. I'm looking into that as an aftermarket purchase right now.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi there fellow UK proposed owner.
I too have ordered up a new M50D with anticipated mid March delivery.
Fully loaded with the M performance pack finished in Carbon Black.
I too have the same sort of questions especially the mpg view as this is the only thing I am worried about.
I was going to go with the Guard X protection through the dealership for paint and leather, but have done this on previous cars and total waste of money. So I am looking at cheaper alternatives either self applied or through a specialist - any idea folks?
Be nice to hear the spec you have ordered.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg
Great to hear from you. Sounds like a great spec car you've ordered. I'm also mid to late March delivery. My spec is (not quite fully loaded but close perhaps):
Space Grey
Black surrounds and rails
Black Dakota
M Sport Plus Package (HUD, Sun Protect Glass, Harman/Kardon, Speed Limit Display)
468M wheels
Tow bar (kids bikes / rack) WITH a request for the 13 pin elecs to be all wired!
Adaptive Dynamic suspension
Reversing Assist Camera with Surround View
Comfort Seats Front
Fine Brushed Aluminium
Leather Instrument Panel
Adaptive LED
Apple Car Play
Online Entertainment
Enhanced Bluetooth
Multi-Functional Instrument Panel
Wifi hotspot prep

It will be my third space grey - I really really(!) wanted a change, and agonised over it, initially going for Glacier Silver, but in the end, I just just wasn't brave enough with the local country roads and dirt showing. I clean the inside of alloys... mustgetahobby...

Similar dealer experiences with the paint protection. My research so far found Cambridge (UK) Autogleam's youtube Channel and I quite like the look of Gtechniq, (perhaps they'd do us a deal!)
Open to other users experiences of paint protection products or other BMW owners thoughts on Gtechniq paint, glass, leather, console, protection. 5 / 7 yrs protection really??
Cheers for now

I went from a 2011 X5 30d to a 2015 x6 50d. MPG the same - shows 31mpg. Steering much lighter. Ride softer when not in Sport - although change not as dramatic as on my wifes 2016 JCW when changing settings. Performance - er licence loss a strong possibility in the UK! Luckily I live right next to German border. It is totally at ease at 150mph. Accelerating from 70 to 150 is blistering. I had mine delivered without any dealer prep and went straight to a detailer for GTech at £650. IT WORKS - the dealer stuff does not! I got BMW 20" off set winter wheels and tyres at around £3200 - essential with the ice as the stock ones are crap in ice and snow.

so it comes out to $93,000 USD. Within line for a X5M here in the USA. Is there added tax on an X5M due to gasoline, cylinder count, efficiency factors?

Wing Co - some great info there, thank you - much appreciated!

Flying Ace - Agree with Wing Co circa £75k list price including sales tax (VAT), but before your negotiation skills. I use a broker as a starting point. Some big deals to be had. 10% discount is standard. I've seen 15-18.5% off the top spec models at end of quarter if you look around.
The same standard sales tax (20% VAT) is applied to all purchases in the UK. Different annual tax to run the car on the road "Road Fund Licence" depending upon emmissions.

Great spec Simon
I was so tempted to go space grey as well however my current Jag is dark grey/black so wanted a change. Seen the Carbon black on an X3 and really like the colour.
I'm really pushing the dealership to get my order pre 1st April as the VED car tax changes for all new cars and the hike in price is big Anything registered pre 1st April cars retains the current tax rate.
Depending on cost I would be up for a specialist detailer prepare the car rather than BMW otherwise need to know good products that I could use myself.
Did you get a good deal on the new car?
Really can't wait for the new arrival - surprisingly haven't even test driven the M50 as there weren't any vehicles at the time but I have heard some really great reports on performance and driving ability.
I suspect both our cars will be on the same boat from USA if yours is due mid March.
Should meet up one day or even arrange a X5 forum meet if there are any other UK members here.
Cheers Greg

The dealer price with options for mine was shy of £85,000 includes tax, delivery, 5 year service plan, etc, however I was able to negotiate a 17% discount so paying £69,000 on a finance deal.
This time of year is a good time to buy brand new cars and get reasonable discounts from dealerships wanting to meet their targets.

Hi, and good choice. I have had my M50D for 3 months now. Regular motorway driving with a bit of traffic on a-roads does 32 MPG in Comfort mode. If you use ECO, you will get 36/37, but I only use that when in slow traffic. Sport mode all the time will bring that down to 29ish. I have GTechniq Crystal Serum light and recommend it as the best possible. If you find a good detailer it will be worth it. I also have Space Grey and `I am very happy with it. the option I would also go for is the on-line entertainment which, through Deezer/Napster gives you access to millions of tracks and downloads real quick. The car can be driven sedately or enjoy the 740nm torque!

Sounds like my X5 SE40d might be on the same boat as well...

My production week is scheduled for week 6 with delivery week 12 (week beginning Mar 20th)

Due to the discounts on offer for the M50d at the time I did consider it for a while (would have only been about 1500 quid more than my 40d spec for spec!!) but I just really didn't want a MSport.

I've had my Carbon Black X5 M50d since mid September and am just approaching 9,000 miles!

I've also had the ceramic sealant applied after delivery - the car still cleans up easily and looks stunning.

Check out the thread I put together on the detailing:

http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1316242

In terms of mpg, my car sits at 29mpg as an average and I drive it hard a lot of the time - it's difficult not to!!

I love the car, got used to the size within a week and now throw it around like the M135i.

You will not regret it.

I'm up for a meet once you all have your cars.

Blimey...... I see you have a 9-5 Aero as well

I had one of those before I bought the 135i.

Owned it for over 6 years, was the last of the 4 x Saab's I had owned since the mid 90's.

Just thought i would chime in too, i have a M50D scheduled for Week 9 delivery which is the first week of March. Enough time to avoid the April tax hike. I also deliberated over the colour and have also gone space grey, despite my current car being space grey too. Initially i wanted a change and was thinking of going black but I'm not sure i can maintain it. I do find the lighter colours make the car seem less bulky because you get a contrast between the c pillar and the black wrap around portion of the rear windscreen.

It seems to be a running theme but I didn't test drive one either, my local dealer Berry Chiswick was poor and just about let me have half an hour in a 30D SE with no spec. When I tried to finalise a deal I found i could get better elsewhere so placed an order with Arden Maidstone. They didn't have a M50D available so i couldn't get a drive with them either. I've only driven the 30D car with se suspension running 20" wheels and not experienced a car with the adaptive m suspension. So I have taken a punt with my order and specified adaptive dynamic drive. I've always wanted this option and it will be nice to have it specced on a new car with warranty without worrying about the fancy active roll bars going wrong. I may have been happy with the standard adaptive m suspension but I'll never know.

I placed my order on 1st Nov 2016 so have had plenty of time to deliberate spec, i currently have it as

Space Grey
Black Dakota/Silver Hex Trim
20" 468M wheels
M sport Plus
Cold Weather Package
Climate Comfort Screen
Surround View/Reverse Assist
Driving Assistant Plus
Panoramic Roof
Comfort Seats
Adaptive Dynamic Drive
Adaptive Leds
Enhanced Bluetooth

One thing i just realised a few days ago is that with the revisions to the standard specifications the multi function display is now included in the m sport plus pack where it wasn't before the changes. I was on the fence with this option but couldn't justify paying for it. So now its included I'm quite happy

I will also be looking to retrofit the X6 knee pads, because although I like the silver hex trim on the dash and door cards, I don't like it on the centre console. I find the leather knee pads work really well there and the centre console looks better being all black. I haven't yet checked the price of them yet.

Thanks Greg - very kind. I think we should arrange an little M50d Rally! Great idea.

Are you going for the full M performance body kit, stripes, grill etc??

I too wanted a delivery date pre April 1st. My build date is mid February. Shockingly unfair change of road fund licence rules from 1st April 2017 without much publicity... funny that! Seems purely about taxing people who are believed to be able to afford it, rather than dealing with the root cause.

I understand from my dealer that the key is for the car to be in the UK (Doncaster distribution) in order for the dealer to be able to register it, and not at your dealership. I'd still prefer to have the comfort of it being "physical" at the dealer to be sure, but a backup position perhaps? I'd be interested if your dealer takes this view too. Hope that helps.
