X5 50i spark plug and coils

Shout out to Maverik259, Doberman16, and DuSH for sharing spark resolutions for tuned 50i.

After running with JB4 and Dinan, I switched to BM3 Stage 1. Damn it's amazing. BUT car starting hesitating/shudder during WOT. As I read, the issue only gets worse and it did. Eventually lead to drive train malfunction and the car became a violent, rolling shaker bottle.

Locked the DME and took it to the dealership to have X5M (gapped 0.023in) plugs, new coils, and X5M air filters installed.

Results are that it did the trick! Car runs smooth and pulls amazing. Dyno scheduled for next week before DPs.

Are the x5m coils different than n63tu coils? How much per coil?

I just ran with N63TU coils. I got an employee discount for coils $20 a coil.

Is that stage 1 91 tune or 93? I’m currently running 91, but not sure if it worth it to do 93....

Sorry for dumb question but I am taking the car in for plug change at the dealership. My 50i has almost 60K miles. Also experienced drivetrain malfunction but cleared up. Intermittently feels lacking power during highway speeds.

Should I tell them to change the coils as well since they are already incurring the labor with spark plugs and technically it should just be additional parts only?

I would ask them to change the coils at the same time since they have to take the coils out to replace spark plugs. Of course double check with the SA to make sure they don't "double dip" the labor time.

Thank you! I didn't want to unnecessarily replace but seems like a good idea to change out completely with plugs, at 60K miles.

Personally I think it’s unnecessary. Those coils should last you until your next plug change.

My current issue with my 50i is when I try to accelerate while going past 70mph (for instance to pass someone), the car shuddering intermittently, almost as if I am going over bumpy road. I used my OBD scanner and there are no error codes, at least not yet. I presume its the plugs. I was going to try different gas (typically use 93 Costco) and or use Techron complete cleaner?

Not necessarily guys. I had the same problem and changed the plugs with no success. It wasn't until I changed the coils that the problem went away. Just my experience.

You're right, anything is possible so you never know. I'd at least just start with the plugs and go from there.

Quick update. Spark plugs were changed and car runs like new! SA said that coils still looked OK and not recommended changing. Thanks everyone!

Are X5M plugs the best upgrade option? I recall a mention of NGK but can't find the model and what the thought was on performance.

Thanks. I went on ecstuning website and it tells me these are not a fit. Is that just because they are not a normal swap for the X5 but they do fit/work? Did you get NGK over the BMW X5M because they perform better or...
