You wont get sick of it. I love it and you'll use it everyday.
Being honest, I don't use it on a daily basis, but I'm happy with it, works perfectly every time, at the end, I rather have it than not

In my case, we don't get any service with traffic updates in Costa Rica other than Waze, so for me, having the chance to display Waze on a big screen paid for the gadget. On the other hand, I also like much more iDrive than Carplay

That's pretty useful info. If there was a way to hack the iDrive to receive native BMW RTTI I'd probably go that route, but this is tempting. The price on their site is now $439.00 which is a bit steep.

1. Unichip Carplay Retrofit

2. Unique Auto Developments

3. Bimmer-Tech CarPlay MMI

4. Bimmer-Tech NBT Evo Retrofit

5. Naviplus

Any specific reason your preference sits with #2?

Unichip looks really intriguing, simple memory 8 click to switch between NBT and the Aux. Appears to work pretty flawlessly as well, miss Waze/GMaps on the dash

I myself wanted a wireless connection, that's why I preferred Unique Auto, but it's not ready yet. Lots of E7x/Fxx guys like Unichip box and it's plug n play.

Unichip Smartbox is a great value for $285 if you can organize a group buy of 10 units straight from the company.

OK couldn't resist... Ordered.

For those of you with it, when playing music off your iPhone in CarPlay, what does the HUD display when you use the scroll wheel?

On the unichip setups, and similar styles, aren't there small limitations?

Like can you listen to the radio and use the carplay interface at the same time?

Just installed apple car play this weekend in my F15 and G12. It's amazing. It reads your text messages, handles your music, you can ask Siri anything and best of all, you get Waze on the big screen.

PM if you want to learn more and get a great deal.

It looks great

Did you install it yourself? The install looks a bit complicated. I'm trying to determine whether I should just have an audio shop do it for me.

All my existing hardware was compatible. If you send me your VIN, I can probably tell.

Had lots of people asking about apple car play. You need idrive 5 or 6.

I attached a reference guide

You do not.

This thread is mainly about UNICHIP now, where you can add CarPlay to older systems (like my 2015 X5).

Understood. But if you have ID 5 or 6 and interested in car play, then I can assist.

I'm getting a lot of PM's and it seems some are confused. No remote coding services are required to make this work.

Just need to ensure your idrive is at least version 5 or 6.

For those that have installed the UNICHIP box - I just received a quote for $220.00 from a local shop. Is that reasonable?

It depends on what your time is worth? (1-1.5 hours maybe). But it's only the removal of 8 screws and plugging in a 'pass through' harness for easy plug-n-play results. Here's a video https://youtu.be/53cWeqY0TiY

The CarPlay unit just arrived. It came with a microphone to connect. Is the mic necessary, or is it able to use our OEM mic?

Yes you can hear radio while on Carplay touching the "Mode" button on your steering wheel. Also I can scroll the radio stations on my HUD

Unichip requires their mic to be ran to work with Siri, I believe BimmerTech uses factory mic.
