We just bought this set at American Furniture Warehouse. $2100, and maybe the most comfortable couch ever. Bargain. |

speaking of furniture I was kind of fascinated how the Keno Brothers of Antique Roadshow furniture fame wound up in some shenanigans after delving into he classic exotic car game.

We just bought a big-ass sectional from Lovesac and are 110% happy with it. Really high-quality stuff, with a price tag to match. But they always have a huge Black Friday sale so that's the time to score.
As for furniture store shopping - remember, furniture stores are literally ALWAYS having some kind of sale, and prices are super-negotiable, especially if you're spending a fair amount of cash. Never pay full price! It's almost like buying a car. Make them a lowball offer, be ready to walk if/when they reject it, let them drag you back and negotiate a final number.

Look into Macy's as well, our couch from there has been a fantastic value.
https://www.macys.com/shop/furniture?id=29391 West Elm, and then the random fancy boutique stores for important items like dining room table, chairs etc. |

Agreed - All quality furniture companies. I would also include DWR and Stickley. Trick is to buy when items are on sale. I have bought items from all the above when on sale. I recently bought a Herman Miller desk chair at DRW for 50% off. Went back to buy a second all sold.

We're hopefully done buying furniture. Spent a goddamn fortune furnishing the house with furniture that goes 75% unused.
And I still don't have my yucca plant for my office.... 1.5 years later.

Most of the furniture in our primary home is from Ethan Allen, although I’m not sure the quality now is the same as it was 20 years ago when we bought most of what we have. For our condo, we have some Amish made furniture, which is very high quality but not the most stylish.

the nicest most reliable brand right now is probably Baker though I wasn't blown away by their most recent catalogue.
Henredon I always thought was the most beautiful but I believe bankruptcy in 2013 John Widdicomb was also very pretty but bankruptcy. DeSede has one very nice sofa, I'm not certain that particular style is available right now. Very fine pieces from good auction houses, I'm not really sure you can completely trust in terms of 100% authentic, too many pieces have been repaired. But still if you have the means and willing there are some amazing pieces of wood furniture, French particularly but I guess due to the new world wood amazing American pieces. But the one thing is that there are really nice fabrics available for upholstery. You pick up a pretty mid-century sofa & chairs and do some Schumacher Fabric... So many of the good furniture stores have closed. And I heard for awhile there was some very good wood carving (chairs ) coming out of South East Asia, the craft was and had been apprenticed over decades to a very high level. But since the whole market has collapsed not sure the state of that workmanship at present. There is custom furniture. names like Nickey Kehoe, Pierre Jeannette, but I think you need to start working with designers in that realm. Last edited by overcoil; 10-28-2022 at 10:31 PM.. |

It is worth your time to poke around on Etsy for the stuff that can potentially be shipped. There is some very cool stuff in there from the little guy.

Big Ikea guy here - I like my furniture cheap and disposable. Maybe once I have my own place I'll spend money on it but so far an Ikea bed frame, bookcase, and a desk is enough. Though I have a Casper mattress and an Aeron, two decent quality surfaces I spend 90% of my time at home

Freightliner. I couldn't get out of that store quick enough! No f-in-weigh would I ever go back there, even if it meant spending $129 for delivery if I ultimately decide that their mattress is my best option.....

We went to McGuire (now a Baker line) for the dining room set and a pair of living room lounge chairs. Schumacher fabrics are on all of the chairs. We got one bedroom set from Scott Jordan Furniture. The other bed came from McRoskey in San Francisco, as did both mattresses. The dresser to go with the McRoskey bed came from Copeland Furniture. (We're in a 2-bedroom condo.)
The rest of the main pieces were bought at boutique-type places, including one-offs by American craftsmen and some modern Italian designer pieces and lamps. Almost all of that furniture was bought in the 90s with the idea that it would last us for the duration. So far, we've only needed to re-cover one loveseat. That was my bad. We went to Levenger for things like a filing cabinet and end/bedside tables, none of which they sell anymore. Today, I'd look at a Scott Jordan-type place for pieces like those. Aeron chairs are in each office. The office desks are simple Danish modern assemble-it-yourself pieces that we bought in the 80s. They're indestructible. The carpets and rugs are hand-knotted, which you can find in all sorts of places if they're to your taste. Their downside is getting all of the pet hair/fur off them (just part of what you sign-up for). If I was looking today, I'd look at used furniture. Baby boomers are downsizing to beat the band, and their kids typically already have furnished spaces and/or they don't want the sorts of pieces their parents have. If you can find quality pieces that you like, they'll generally offer excellent value compared to buying the same quality new. It can be work slogging through the junk, but there's some good stuff out there. I think buying without going through higher-end dealers is the trick to that approach. Auction houses and local outfits with a charity aspect to them seem to be the best where we are. Maybe Nextdoor is another option, too, I don't know.

Nice and cozy. I'm lazy but there are some nice stuff at IKEA. The odd furniture I buy at some independents. Haven't done this shopping for a while now.

I look for small high end stores going out of business and go to the auction. I paid $2500 for a $15k couch, $2000 for a $10k wall unit, etc. I spent a total of $20k for about $115k worth of Italian custom furniture 13 years ago for my entire house.

If you can handle the price and are looking for furniture that lasts, I'd go to Ethan Allen. They are expensive, but most everything is highly customizable in terms of color and fabric. It's pretty crazy. They also sell repair pieces for much of the furniture they sell. For example, we can still buy the same fabric and cushion cover(s) for our Ethan Allen sofa we bought back in 2006. We just got a slip cover for that couch because it is still in great shape, but has become our couch in the basement and we wanted a new color. The couch served us for 12 years as the family couch and is just as firm as it was new.
