Windshield replacement
Got a crack on the windshield of my 2018 X5 with HUD and need to replace it. Dealer asks for $4,300 ($2,600 for parts and $1,700 for labor, tax included). Insurance said they would cover $2,500 minus deductible. Also got a quote from Safelite, which is $1,100 including recalibration. I didn't ask Safelite what glass it was for that price; I would assume cheap after-market.
My question is, is it worth the markup to have it done at the dealer? I need to pay $2k out of pocket... I guess I can also go with Safelite and ask for OEM glass. But should I trust them with the recalibration work? What do you folks think? Thanks a lot! |

I went through my insurance (GEICO) to have my OEM windshield replacement put in via Safelite after I got pepper sprayed by an 18 wheeler due to loose asphalt on I95. So I called GEICO and told them that I wanted an EOM glass and not an aftermarket. The agent asked me if my vehicle has a HUD, I told them yes, and they approved the OEM replacement as long as I paid the difference. Safelite also did the calibration. I have zero problems with HUD visibility nor lane detection and all the other KAFAS goodies 🤷🏽 Call your insurance company, and make sure they know you want an EOM windshield. Go with Safelite, dealership price is ridiculous! I trust Safelite, the guy did a great job, cleaned the whole area well and removed pretty much all the old sealant before putting in the new one. Full work took about 1.5 hours. |

I’ve never had an issue with safelite in the past with BMWs that had ‘functioning’ windshield-based sensors.
And dang, these windshields are pricey! My E90 was only $500. |

You might want to check this thread out:

I got a similar quote from Safelite for the OEM w/HUD windshield, but it did not include recalibration. They told me only the dealer could do the recalibration.

Safelite did mine and the calibration and my lane departure actually worked BETTER after they did it if you can believe that. Prior it went off constantly. Enough I just turned it off. Might have been out of calibration, dunno. But I took their version of it (non-OEM) and it is find - HUD looks the same as prior to me.
But if you know yourself enough that knowing it is not OEM will make you see it as worse - just buck up and do it. Not worth saving if it'll drive you crazy later thinking about it. I was ready for it to be sub-par - but I honestly would have never known if I had not scheduled it.
