IMO, you've got to get the m-sport flared wheel arches body color painted. I went with a cheap ebay version and after having them painted you can't tell they are "knockoff". The problem with your black wheel arches or even having the flared ones installed but not painting them black is it exaggerates the tire/fender gap. Take a close look at the pic you posted. Gives the illusion that the gap is HUGE! I know, because I'm been down this same road. Again, just my 2 cents, but the painted flarred wheel arches are huge for the overall look.

yeah I agree. that would be the next step, for now I'm keeping costs down and not changing parts out. later fender flares, wheels, etc will come.

I'm sure I'm in the minority... but I prefer the X line two-toning vs. going all black. Especially the wheels. Can't stand black wheels. Your original picture looks great compared to the PS. Change the wheels, get some flares, etc. But that's just one man's opinion. We took the same route with our X line diesel. M sports are the only ones that I like in mono color schemes... excepting black wheels. Can't wait for that trend to die.

But again, just one man's opinion, and I'm sure it's the minority. So no offense meant, this is the internets.

Edit: Here's a before/after with the above. I want to pick up an Msport grille and swap in the slats from the X-line so I can delete the chrome surround on the kidneys. That chrome is the only on the car and it throws off the X line silver IMO.

Your X does look amazing Blue Dragon. I've been getting a few ideas from you... and the wife doesn't like it. Those wheels look charcoal and look a lot like the CF5V Forgestars I run on my E53. Hard to tell from that angle, but I think those are my favorite of the wheels I've seen on your truck.

Black wheels however, are not one of the ideas I've gotten from your posts.

^ Did not like those AT ALL.

^These were nice, but are pretty common. Those brakes though... are stellar. I salivate everytime I see them. There's a set of M5 6pot brakes on Ebay for ~$1300 right now... but the wife would kill me with our trip coming up.

PS: It looks like you are running your roof rails further back than we are. We get a lot of wind noise off of ours but followed BMW's directions for their placement. We feel they should be further back like yours. How is the wind noise?

I tried to move the rails and the box as far back as possible to avoid wind noise. Its pretty quiet in the current configuration. The rear hatch opens without touching, and there is no over hang on the windshield.
Ignore the apple stickers on the box, it was a volvo box and I needed something to cover the volvo and got the stickers from my daughter

Do the brakes, they really are an excellent mod. The black Rennens were forged wheels, you could definitely notice the difference in acceleration and braking between the stock 469Ms (with winter tires) and them. Current BC Forged are pretty light as well. 469Ms will be replaced with Black 611Ms for winter

Any reason why you didn't stick with OEM tire sizes?

They have a taller profile for more comfort, and the size is a lot more reasonable in availability and price.

OEM Sizes
285/35-21
325/30-21

My Sizes
275/40R-21
315/35R-21

I understand you can't do that with an xDrive, so I assume yours is RWD then?

Its an xDrive. What makes you understand that? Tire heights are identical. The xDrive system can adapt to anything under 1.8% in height difference. For me, I didn't want it adapting to anything so I just made sure the tire heights were identical.

I agree to some extent that the two tone looks good, but remember your X is black with chrome accents. Mine is silver with silver accents, I am changing it to a two tone silver with black accents so it is similar to yours, just inverted. Nice looking car though, wheels are high on the list of things to get but they are pricy so they will have to wait unless somebody wants to donate to me haha

I hear you. Ours is actually sophistograu (dark graphite) so definitely darker than yours. But I think I'd start with flares and wheels before blacking things out on yours. It's a pretty attractive X as is. But that's just me, we all have our tastes and if done tastefully, blacking your silver trim should look nice. LoL, but not blacking out the wheels... that'll never look good.

PS, How do we not have a flamesuit emoticon? I could really use it talking all this smack against black wheels.

I'm with crystalworks about X-Line flairs. See my build thread for stock wheels on spacers before I switched to 20s.

Mods to come, new to me x5 50i. Does anybody have these 449 wheels painted black and/or with spacers?

I'm not a fan of the cliché "just bought a new car so let me black out the stock wheels". Think about what you want your vehicle to look like in the long run.

Rather than "mod for the sake of modding", buy some fender flares painted to match your exterior paint. Then add some nice 20" or 21" wheels.

Use your current setup as winters. The X5 can very easily be turned into something that looks cheap. Not naming any names, but feel free to browse through all the prior pictures posted here. You'll find a few.

Yeah in time I'll get fender flares and wheels. For now I'm going to save the money and just drive the car while making some small tweaks. The wheels are super expensive compared to the wrap and/or hyperdip that I could do to the stock wheels for now. The car needed tires when I bought it so it's going to stay with the 19" wheels until those are shot. Right now I'll just continue to mod for the sake of saving money.
