Which X5 to Buy X35I or X35D
Hello,
I just wanted your input.. which X5 is more reliable, X35I or X35D and why? I have heard each has its own issues - but how is the maintenance cost, is it any different? I am going to drive mostly city ~500-600 miles a month and then once a month I will drive another ~700 miles to go out of town... Really appreciate your inputs! |

Diesel is more efficient in the city so I went diesel route and very happy with it, almost 60K miles and 0 issues, around 27 MPG in traffic is great for AWD mid size SUV.
In theory there is less maintenance for diesel since you don't need to do plugs. I would recommend test driving both. Both a very reliable. |

Diesel by far. Fuel economy for one is not comparable. Maintenance should be less and better torque. That being said compare similar size engines. I have had two diesels 335d and 30d x5, never put a dime on power train except for noc sensor on 335d but it was covered under warranty. My 2011 335d had 200000km when sold and currently have 145000 on 2015 x5. Winter you ask. Well we live in Canada and the x5 starts in -35c temps.

Totally biased view (since I got one), but get a diesel. Fuel economy is amazing, especially for such big heavy vehicle - as high as 41mpg - which is a small hybrid car territory. Also, because of all the torque, car feels very responsive and much lighter than it is.
If you have any doubts which one to get, drive them back to back. 35i will feel gutless and sluggish compared to 35d. |

Even with my 4 & 5 yr old potty trained, there is always a pack of baby wipes in the X5 to use at the diesel pump.

The 40e is supposed to be equivalent to the 35i, doesnt compare to the 35d for power.

The battery motor and 4 cylinder work together to create 30i performance. If you google them the performance is the same. But for daily the 40e is great because to hit the gas you go, no hesitation like my 35i had. Instant torque. Just press and go. 35i has terrible lag and scared my wife on occasion as she pressed the gas to go and nothing, then launches you and you almost get hit. Also because you use the brakes less due to regenerative braking the wheels never get dirty. Mine are always clean. Another thing is if you work close to home like 6 miles or so, you'll never need gas so some on the e40 forums average 1000 miles or so a tank I'm around 700 or so a tank but don't recharge all the time. some have gone over a year without using the motor. The diesel will or can be costly later on in higher milage applications but for the most part pretty solid from what I've read. Depends how long your gonna keep it. The electric batteries and electric drivetrain is 10 year 100000 mile warranty. Lastly I had engine issues with my 4 banger as it was an early build and was so busy I couldn't get to the dealer right away so i just cruised in electric mode. Lol almost like you have a backup engine Incase shit goes south !!!! Lol "Disclaimer". I live in Chicago so the electric stations here are all over the place so driving electric is easy and theirs a charge when you need it so different locations vary. With level 2 charger you'll receive full charge in 2 to 2.5 hrs. |

I am diesel owner, I get an average 25 mpg and can't believe you get better than that in the city. It is still good enough for me. Highway mileage can be closer to 30, but you really have to adjust your driving manner to get there.
I owned both diesel and gas, I would buy a diesel as you will get better torque and more fun driving. I am not sure about one or another being cheaper in maintenance. BMW is an expensive car and it also depends on how lucky or unlucky you are. |

Incase you drive longer distances you should look at Diesel and if you need to tow trailer.
Incase you only drive within town and very short distances, you should be prepared that i.e. EGR could create more problems. I got rid of my old Diesel X5, as I was sick and tired of the noise. |

The E70 was quieter than the E53. But the N57S in the F15 (40d M Sport) is very quiet and clean. Not quite as quiet as the same engine in a 435 I have noticed, but you'd be hard pressed to say a 40d M Sport F15 was anything but. I can barely hear it even with the radio turned off. |
