Just got this done as well. bought off of amazon and it didn't come with any sticky thing so I just used 3m double sided tape. Worked like a charm

Got mine as well. I ended up removing the whole panel and installing it the "hard way"; although it wasn't difficult at all. I was afraid to break something by doing the "tape and pulling it off" method.

I see that most replacement red buttons on Amazon, etc only cover the f15 to a 2016 model.
Is there any difference to the button in later years? - mine's a 2018.
This simple mod makes a big difference (in my opinion).

It's essentially the same.

nice DIY

but i'm a bit confused. is the f85/f86 start/stop button different then the f15/f16? if not, then why go through all that trouble to take things apart? why not just do what 2euro did in this video?

IME they are different.

I got the F15 one and it wouldn't work on my F85. The internal connectors are physically different, though not by much.

I did it this way and it worked just fine. I actually had to pull a little slower as they didn't give me enough putty to surround the button and get a good grip but got it off and blue installed.

I'm also quite sure the buttons are the same at least until I see pics showing otherwise cuz the one I got from them looks identical in every way for my F15 as does the one in IND DIY.

Just installed the button that's available on Amazon (with putty) on my 2016 X5M. Ridiculously easy to do and I'm usually terrible at doing anything like this (world's worst tool user). Took two tries with the putty, which there was plenty of, but it came right out. Lined up the new button and pushed in. Done in less than 2 minutes.

Don't remove the panel - this method is so simple I can do it.

Was scared to break something, but tried it anyway. My button arrived today from Amazon. 2 quick pulls (didn't pull hard enough the first time) and it was out, installed with no issues. 60seconds max. Before and after pics.

I am reading that those buttons fit X5 F15 up to 2016 but they do not fit later models. I have a 2018 X5 and want to make sure that it works before I order. Does anyone know? Thanks.

I'm in the same boat and somewhat conflicted. I read the Q&A portion of the ad and there were a few inquiries for an F85 production year 2017 and 2018 and the seller consistently answered that it won't fit.

Yet, I am seeing some folks here being successful with it for that model and years in question.

I want to do it as well, just don't want to end up breaking expensive stuff on such a tiny thing if it just "sort of" fits but not an "exact" fit.

I guess its really about finding the courage to do it and try it out?

I bought one (button only) from Amazon and the seller said it'd fit. It does not fit. It fits into the opening (same diameter) after you remove the original OEM button but won't push to start (won;t go in and out like the original button).

Yikes! Hufington, was it from the same link on this thread or different seller? I went ahead and bought the one from the link here and I got it a few days ago. Haven't installed it yet. Been staring at it for a while. I"m hoping to man up to it here soon.

Mango, it looks similar but I hope that you have one that fits. Let us know.

So I've stared at this red button I got long enough and went ahead and did it. Just got done doing it just now and wanted to update this thread. The button worked. Fires up, lights up, does everything the stock button did. Fits snug, fits perfect, no slop. No issues.

Tiny thing. Changes the look in a big way (I think).

Can you share a link where you bought it?
