Drivers side seat Leather cracking - Warranty claim?

Hi All

I have just (2 weeks ago) bought an approved used 2015 X5 M Sport in White with Ivory leather and 22500 mls, I have just found some cracking on the side of the drivers seat above the seat controls, having searched the forum I see other members have had the same issue.

I have an appointment on Monday with my local dealer for them to take a look, but on the phone they were talking about ‘wear and tear’.

Have any UK members made a claim on their warenty for this fault ? As I would like to offer some evidence of BMW accepting this is a fault and not Wear and tear.

In my opinion it is not of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose

Thanks

I also have a 2015 X5 3.0D M Sport with 23000mls but with Comfort seats in Smoke White Individual leather. No issues so far, just several creases in the leather above the switch panel, which is to be expected given that we always sit on the side bolster when we enter/exit the car.
can I suggest that you print off the Bloggs and keep them up your sleeve if the SA gets a bit awkward? I appreciate that they seem to be in the USA but surely a BMW is a BMW wherever it may be sold. Please keep us updated with the outcome, always useful for everyone !!

This is a common issue. I've got my leather seat cover replaced under warranty. Just said the cushion failure to provide proper support causing the leather crack prematurely.
BMW follow this guideline. The shop foreman will inspect and make sure it's the manufacturer defects before approving the warranty claim.

Thanks all

BMW have ordered new seat base, it’s on a 5 day lead time from Germany, so booked in next week for replacement.

Going to get some leather care cream to keep them in top shape

Cheers

I kept mine in arguably better shape than anyone I have known, and it did not stop my leather from cracking on the left side of the driver's seat. It was replaced with no questions asked.

Mine as well, if it's not too long from the purchase date they should cover it.
however I won't expect some major new leather. just quick fix from a leather specialist. (which won't last long )

Lear makes the current seats in Mexico. I thought I read that bmw is going to a new supplier.
Your best bet to prevent cracking, is to try not to crush the bolster with your weight when getting in and out.
And why does this leather crack? It cracks as if it's vinyl.

My was not "fixed", they replaced it with a brand new sit cover. Car was still under 4/ 50.000 miles original warranty

Took mine to dealer here in us and would not replace under warranty stating it's natural for the seats to do this. They offered to have a leather guy redye it who recommended not doing it in the end cuz it would look worse over time. Anyone else in the US have theirs replaced. Would love to have a precedence to take back to my service manager as he's the one that turned it down and now I'm out of warranty as of last month.

I think it depends on the size of the crack. I got mine replaced around 25k miles/3rd year with a series of cracks about 3 inches long. I could've seen the seat stuffing if I stressed the cracks wide enough. Small cracks may not warrant the whole replacement of seat cover. Overall, I think the seat/cushion design creates this stress point for the leather to crack/tear faster. If they make a seam right at the place, I think no one even notices the crack.

I think pictures displaying the issues listed above would be greatly beneficial to the other members. If anyone has photos, I ask that you post them to provide your issues/previous issues to potentially assist other forum members. Thanks in advance.

I agree, it's hard to visualize where the cracks are taking place without some pictures. Anyone have some they can post? It's the leather on the outside of the lower bolster next to the plastic trim where the controls are?

Yes. Pics aren't really needed it's the same place on all of cars. Just a poor design from BMW and the support foam is too soft there.

It's a bit of a job but you can swap seat covers between driver and passenger bottoms. Then the cracks will be on the inside edge of the passenger seat.
Then be careful and don't crush the bolster when you get in and out! Lift yourself out instead of sliding your butt out.

Wanted to add a photo for reference for the member community. Here is a photo of my driver seat. Not sure how to label them, whether they be tears, splits, cracks in BMW definitive terms, but you can see there are 3 areas of the leather. Background: Recently purchased my vehicle via CPO from Perillo BMW. Did not notice the seat until I brought the vehicle home. Took it to my look dealer, but I was denied coverage for warranty replacement by BMWNA. I called Perillo and the sales manager stated that they would take care of having the leather corrected, but certainly not replaced. Your thoughts as to how to label leather issue???

My CPO had cracking just like that. I had to complain to the service manager and shop foreman before they replaced it under warranty. They tried to correct it first, which didn't do much.
