I absolutely agree that getting a "big" refund is simply loaning the government money at your expense. We've had moves and job changes over the years, but when I am able to stabilize things from one year to the next I always consider it a win if I'm +/- $500 either way. Generally I'll owe the feds a few hundred and get back a few hundred from the State.
