iPhone X / Charging USB

I know its a known issue that charging via USB on iPhone doesn't function correctly due to power usage on the newer phones. However, did they fix this in any recent model years? When I test drove a 2015/2016 recently, it didn't work correctly.

I believe a SA told me that in 2017 they fixed the issue, but I forgot.

I charge my XS through a cigaret plug (12v / 2A). I never used the build in usb for charging, just for music on a stick.

My only thought is that connecting my iphone directly to the car increases music quality compared to bluetooth. While still keeping it simple with spotify/music app.

Do a wireless retrofit and save that USB port for something else. https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1450948

Wireless charging sucks still compared to plugging it in. At least on iPhone. It's only 5w and you still lose music quality.

I have a 2014 and have no issues charging my iPhone XS Max

I also ran an 2nd auxiliary usb directly to the head unit to replace my console phone snap in adapter.

Mine seems to disconnect. I don't get audio or anything.

Audio plays fine if I use Bluetooth though.

BMW fixed this issue in 2017 and some late 2016 models. Only way to test this is to plug an iphone into the USB, if it constantly beeps, then it has the old design and BMW won't do anything about it on it's own.

However, if your idrive crashes randomly (known issue for 14 and 15 models) and still under warranty, with a good SA or shop foreman on your side, BMW will replace idrive with newer design which also solved the USB issue.

My replacement unit works flawlessly now, no more idrive crash or USB port issues.

My iPhone X doe not charge sufficiently to keep the battery from draining when I run Waze and V1Driver (for Valentine One radar detector). My sense is that the two GPS apps consume power faster than the iPhone can be recharged when plugged into the USB port. I now keep my iPhone connected to my car by BT rather than the audio port and power it from the 12V in the console.

I drive a 2016 X5.

I have a 2015 X5, I actually just got a replacement iDrive head unit because I was getting the "No Signal" error message, I think I'm going to test it out to see if it works now!

I got my car back from the dealer and I plugged my iPhone XS Max into my car and it looks nice it charges and plays audio now, so I guess I got the newer head unit.

Never had any issues. I use the oem cable. Using the USB port the charging is very very slow like 10% in an hour. So if you are using your phone, it might still discharge. I just have a 2.1amp cig light adapter which will charge almost 30-40% in an hour so I just switch the cable to that when I am using the phone for something.

Glad it worked out for you.

USB charging is faster now with the newer idrive although 2.4 amp car charger is still the fastest.

I have an Anker USB PD charger and corresponding USB-C to Lightning cable, but sometimes I have found it convenience to find the address or whatever on my phone and then paste it into the Connected app; then I plug in the USB and my navigation starts.

I know I can send to car or use other things, the USB way is fastest.

Actually seems this new unit recognized my phone faster too.

I brought AUKER 2.4 amp cigarette charger on the console. Works like a charm!

How does this apply to charging in the car?

It's a pity that an article I saw before about iPhone or iPad not charging does not list a solution in this case.
