Trunk closing issues

I have a 14 x5 35i . When the hatch is going to close and right before it goes to latch to the tail gate it won't latch . It just barely misses latching to the tail gate . What can cause this . Any help would be appreciated.

I strongly suggest you try DIY. Parts are around $400.
There are few screws in the lower panel you need to remove to access the actuator.
Should have tried myself, but they initially told me it could be something simpler.

I suggest before you spend $$, you re-check if the lower part closes/latches correctly. Top piece stopping couple of inches short (if that's the case) is a safety feature.

Absolutely. Sometimes just touching opening latch will make car think that the bottom part is open.

Yea I checked for obstructions and nothing is blocking it . I've messed around with the hinge on the tail gate and have a feeling the soft close mechanism is bad . Bring it by bmw center on Monday for diagnostic

You can check the mechanism with a screwdriver.
