Rear differential seal leaking
Hi I have BMW X5 F15 and I found out that rear Drive Axle Shaft Seal a little bit leaking.
I'm DIYer and a lot of maintenance and repair do myself. I really ask adwise what to do 1 Some people said just put a little beat of AT-205 reseal and forget. 2 I would really prefer to replace the seal . But I read on Internet you need a special tools and sometimes it disconnect from differential. If anybody a procedure or preform that work? Thank you for your help |

ah, the rear pinion seal. Soo common on these it seems. Sorry, I never did it myself or know the procedure.
I had mine done under warranty. The shop I go to said mine wasn't serious and would be fine for a little while but eventually it'll need to be replaced. It's like a $15 part and $6-900 in labor or something like that, lol. You can get the tool, I saw it on Amazon for ~$160 (not sure if it's rentable anyplace) and I think it's a 1.5-2.5 hour job (for pros). |

This is the one that I found. I've never used it so I can't be 100% (I *think* this is the tool) https://www.amazon.com/Front-Cranksh.../dp/B072XJMRRP |

Ok, so your engine rear main seal is leaking, NOT your rear axle pinion seal in the differential?
I think there was some confusion in here. Dropping the trans won’t be much fun… |

A few weeks ago I replaced the diff oil and the past couple of days I've seen a few drops of oil on my garage floor below the rear diff.
It's leaking from the pinion seal. Today I extracted all the oil, added 35ml AT-205 and fresh Amsoil. I think this was a self inflicted ailment - I overfilled it the previous time - didn't wait for the trickle to stop before putting the fill plug back in - when I removed the plug today it made a fair size puddle before the dripping stopped. If the leak isn't resolved I'm in two minds if this is a job I could/should tackle on four ramps in my garage at home, and how many special tools I'll need to buy. And good pointers on procedure, parts and special tools will be appreciated. |
