Yes, through Expert mode. It's not too scary. I followed the instructions laid out in this YouTube video:

I retrofitted my E70. It was never an option on that vehicle, either. We use the Soccer-kick Tailgate almost every day!

I wonder if it was ever offered on the F15?

It was.

I would love to look at doing this retrofit. My googlefu ia been weak. I haven't been able to comeup with the p/n and wiring/pinout needed for it.

I wonder would it be just plug and play?

As i mentioned, it was not an E70 option. But, hearing BMW actually offered it on the model, it should be far more straightforward on the F15 to retrofit.

You would think so, but every time I looked into it. All i could find were threads of people going back and forth over how complicated it was. Without really stating why its so complicated.

if you do end up doing it on yours, please do let us know how you did it.

So i found this for the F10's. Not sure how this would transfer to our X's nor about the coding. It does look fairly straight forward tho, and is pretty much plug and play with the activ option tag.

The links you found show the FRM module being used to retrofit the option on older models. My E70 has the FRM.

I only see a functional description offered in ISTA for Contact-Free Tailgate Opening with the USA X5. The Evaluation Module is not showing up in the literature as being actually installed in the vehicle. I looked in 2015 & 2018.

It is pretty trivial to buy the hardware and connect the module to the LIN bus. I do not know if the option exists in the BDC module firmware or anywhere else.

Having said that, here is the solution for an F16.

https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1540680&page=3

And, skoold2003 got it working on his F15.

Cheers for the link, had a read. So to me it looks like its mostly plug and play with a few aktiv settings. Could these be done via BimmerCode?

Also, whats the difference between:
61-35-7-429-824
61-35-7-496-165
61-35-7-422-700

Just reading the part descriptions and they all say Smart Opener Control Unit.

Reading through skoold2003 post, it looks like he got the 700 unit.

Ultimately, newer ones can replace the older.

Yeah but from that list, only the
61-35-7-429-824
61-35-7-496-165
seem to be interchangeable.

The guys in that thread were talking about 61-35-7-422-700, just curious how the 700 comes in play.

My guess is it is irrelevant. Pretty low risk for how cheap these parts are from the salvage market.

A safe bet would be to buy used controller and sensors which came off the same car.

Fair enough, shipment to my part of the world is annoying.

Tomcat_F15_STL Legend, cheers for the write up.

hey Question, the module ends in 797. Its none of the part numbers on the list. It seems to be only used in the Wraith RR5??

Is that the one you ended up using?

Man! I wish I had a Wraith RR5 - that would be epic!

The first three shots are random internet photos to fill in the blanks for others. Perhaps, I should have noted it on the pictures.

I used 61-35-7-496-165 because the tabs were cracked off on the other module I had purchased. I used those tabs to zip-tie it to the metal behind the bumper cover.

fyi, it was not necessary to remove the bumper cover as there was plenty of room to reach up from underneath. The biggest stinker was fishing a wire up to the BDC module in the passenger footwell. The carpeting and insulation is insanely thick and grippy to push past. Surprisingly, BMW has improved their mounting clips and nothing broke or snapped pulling off trim pieces.

Type this following phrase into a google search box. and see if you get any results: BMW coding cheat sheet pdf

Coding parameters are basically the same for all BMWs that have the same communication system & modules. Which means an F15/F06/f10/f01/f30 (X5/6/5/7/3 series) will have the basically the same coding parameters if they have the same modules (CAS/BDC/JBE/FEM/FRM/etc). If not exactly the same...they will be very similar.

EDIT: found this cheat spreadsheet doing a google search: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

I think the one Monkeypoop is referring to is the one from Ben
That one had more features and a slightly bigger cheatsheet
I had both but didn't get to save the other one to be offline

This one is still good too though
