Post-delivery Running Boards

Anyone have recommendations on running boards for 2014 BMW X5 xDrive 35i?

Aftermarket? vs. BMW OEM?

Can these be installed fairly easily as a DIY?

I would read the feedback and comments on this board about their usefulness before embarking on this.

I would tend to stay with OEM for look consistency and warranty (where/if applicable).

I apologize in advance, but here is my editorial on the subject.....

Unlike most SUVs, these are not a step lower than the cabin (bottom of the door) floor. They are the same height, and therefore do not provide any step whatsoever. Also, by extending the cabin floor out, you are very likely to have muddy and wet calves when getting in and out of the car, unless you are parked somewhere where you can swing the door completely open.

They are useful if you plan on having a cargo box, as they provide a better landing when your are standing and loading. I am cargo box ready, with a towel in the back which I place on the floor, in case I am muddy or snowy. I had it in my '14 and am happy without it on my '15.

Thanks for the feedback. i was thinking about adding them because it would help my two year old son be able to climb into the car on his own. Its not a huge deal but, thought it might be a good solution.

They do help with kids. My eight year old loves them for the back. Plus, from an aesthetic standpoint, I actually like the look better on the X5 with running boards with BSM better than the M line trim.

If you have shorter legs, clearing them as you get in and out of the car can be an issue.

Mattbianco is right, the BMW X5 runners disn't seem to help with much and often got in the way. However, if you have children maybe you'll find useful? I wouldn't go 3rd party as a neighbor did and his x5 looks low rent now - IMHO.

Also, I had to constantly clean/dust the back of my pants as they would often rub against the running boards when getting out.

Not what you're asking, but another nay vote on the running boards. I wish I didn't have them! I hate to think what the left edge of my nappa driver's seat is going to look like in a few years after me trying to slide myself out far enough so my legs clear the running boards.

@pesh, to answer installation difficulties.
I did retrofit a side step on one of the forum member, I would say between 1 being easy and 10 being difficult, it would be rated at 6.
Everything is straight forward, just time consuming and a bit hard where it is closed to the fender flare.
Usefulness, all of the members has mentioned them already.
I got an M Sport and my 2 years old just crawl backward to get out from the car. He think he is big already, refusing all sorts of help from the parents.

I did a retrofit on mine and I can say that I DO use it for stepping in and out of the vehicle

Acts as a mud flap and keeps mud and slushy snow away from the doors
Washing the roof
Climbing in and out of the 3rd Row
Aesthetically better vs not having one
Matches the xLine trim very well
