Lightbulb Snow & Go...

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I have not found a thread on any BMW forum discussing the vehicle itself in winter so for those of you on here who already spent a winter with the X5M. What are your thoughts and impressions? Doing it again? Any tips or advice? Debating on winterizing this or storing in the garage and using a dedicated winter vehicle.

Any issues or difficulties with the RFT on 21" in snow/cold temps?

I live near Vail Colorado. Drive the X5M all winter with Pirelli Scorpions on 20" wheels. 30+ days a year skiing and multiple trips back and forth to my house in Utah. It's a great winter car. The finish is taking a bit of a beating, along with the windshield, but traction is great (leave it in Efficient mode).

I have done 2 winters with my X5M and it has been great. I'm running the factory winter setup with Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow. I've travelled in over a foot of snow on multiple occasions without ever getting stuck. Excellent snow vehicle!

The E70 X5M I owned didn't perform very well but far from a hazard. Perhaps the F85 designers and engineers took that into consideration since no one on here has any complaints.

This vehicle performs very well in the snow with the BMW Winter wheel/tire package (611M). No need to store this during the winter...get the right tires and wheels and you'll be good to go.

I have the 21” 612M on mine and it’s time to put on some winters. Pirelli Ice and Snow seems to be the only option...they had some Yokahamas too but they got terrible reviews.

How loud is the pirelli compare to the Michelin PSS?

who gave the yokohama poor reviews? they are new tire so i am a curious. reason being they're not a run flat and they have a better tread pattern with far more grip based on the design.

I'm surprised to hear this. I had E71s prior to the F86 and never had a problem in bad weather. I had a bit less ground clearance for the big storms but running snow tires I never had an issue on either generation. I do run a square set up for snows. I had 19s on the E71s and now 20s on the F86. Did you run staggered?

I was on the style 299m wheels with the Pirelli Scorpion (IIRC).
Also I traded a Range Rover Supercharged and got into that so perhaps my opinion of my first winter experience with the vehicle was different simply based on my previous vehicle and it's capability to perform in those conditions.

No opinion on the yokos, but would note that the OE winter set drops the rear to 285 from the 325 on summer rubber. 4cm is meaningful in snow/low traction.
