Unable to reset Emergency Breaks on X5 50i F15

Hi People,

I have been going thru tones of articles and YouTube videos to release the emergency brakes on my SAV but no success.

I see in the older model there used to be a red tool to pull the emergency break release which is so described in the i drive manual. I don't have that. Unfortunately i cant pull it directly up awards due to less space so i am pulling it diagonally and nothing has happened.

I am completely stuck. Earlier articles on this are a copy paste from the manual so i need some experienced responses with details.

It is thru research i got to know what the issues is. This should be a DIY.
For some reason the pictures have come upside down. Not sure how to correct that.

I thought those with the wire loop (like in your pic) are supposed to use the screwdriver to facilitate pulling up on the brake release. Stick the blade of the screwdriver through the loop..then pull upward. Are you saying there’s no room to do that?

The sticker near the loop (you can see it in your pic) is saying that there’s more information in the owners manual.

Also take note of the warning that if you use the emergency release…that it may be difficult to return things to normal. So make sure you have an understanding of how to put things back in working order.

I did put the screw driver horizontally and pulled upwards but nothing. Your recommendation is what i tried before. during this time the Parking "P" light is on. That doe snot go away. I think once the Emergency Brakes are released the next step would be to reset the "P" light from the dial. I should be okay and will get things checked.
The issue is as i am out of extended Service warranty but still have extended BMW warranty for engine and few other parts, BMW service center will take this issue around the world and give me a high bill and say stuff along with this is broken. I have caught them do this. Well i know what the issues is luckily but unable to fix it. Maybe a third party mechanic. Any suggestions?

Have you tried the "electronic" emergency release procedure? If not, see instructions below. The difficulty comes from trying to get the vehicle NOT to start. You may want to PULL the fuel pump's fuse...that way the engine won't start and that will fulfill one of the requirements to release the parking lock:

I tried that in the same way. I did not pull the gas tank lever as i dont know where that is. See pic if thats the lever you are talking about.

Going back to the point, When i move the gear stick forward, and hold it for 4 secs, it is in "P" mode and moving it again forward keeps it in "P" mode. It never goes in "N"

Also pushing the button for ignition and then pushing it again for starts the engine obviously. My brakes are literally kissing the roters.

For f... sake!
Read the owner's manual first...

That is releasing the fuel filler cap, it has nothing to do with the fuel pump fuse.
P and N are transmission modes, you will not release the car from Parking by pulling the parking brake emergency release...

Yeah, i read the manual. I too did not find the relation of the gas tank lever with my issue in the manual. However, i followed the instructions but am unable to. Simple, it did not work for me. Did it multiple times. I have tried the manually releasing it and the electronic way shared. Unless you have some more advice or cross question me on how i did, i will start to look for a 3rd party mechanic who can come to my place and take a look at it.

Did you want me to take a video while i do it?

Can you please elaborate a bit more on the problem here. I read this thread and not quite sure what happened to your car and what are you trying to do? Your transmission stuck in park? You battery is dead and your parking brake is on? What is going on?

More information about the original problem you're trying to solve would certainly help, but for what it's worth, the electronic procedure for unlocking the transmission calls for you to remove the fuel pump FUSE not any lever. The fuse should be 165 (20A), at the bottom of the rear fuse box (I highlighted it in your picture). Without power to the Fuel Pump Control module (EKPS) the engine won't start and you should be able to complete the procedure.

Well, nothing worked. I finally tried calling 3rd party mechanics who said the know what needs to be done but were not sounding confident.
Hence i did what i was trying to avoid...going to BMW service center. Feeding Frenzy on customers.
They said EB cannot be manually released and electronically it gets released which she said is done but the computer puts it right back again. So they said they will replace EMF which is a $2,200.00 expense which is covered in extended warranty i have. Upon researching, i did not see where it is costing so much. I am guess it is including labor but where can i find the cost of it. Else we can close the thread

piyush128k This thread confusing. TLRD. Are you trying to set the gearbox into N or release the Handbrake? You said it goes back into "P", which one? The transmission is a P (Park), and the Parking Brake is a P. Take photo.

Here, I made a post here mid way on how to set transmission into N.

If your sure its the Parking brake, see Picture. For more info on parking brake, see pdf.

*EDIT*, on your question for $2,200. if they are planning on replacing the actuator unit. That itself is a $1300 part.

Also what exact issue are you trying to solve? Couldn't see any info, but if you give some context, we maybe able to assist better.

I have a F15 X5 and had to do the manual release. Everything worked just fine following the manual pulling the loop with a screw driver - it was hard to pull it with a lot of force and you do hear it disengage.

My next question is that how do you reconnect or get the parking break to work again? The manual says it must be done by a technician.

Anyone reconnect it DIY?

I want to get rid of this Parking Break Failure light and the warning to please secure vehicle from rolling.

Thanks!
