50I Oil pan upgrade DIY

I am in the process of upgrading my trans pan to the M model which is aluminum. There are several threads on DIY on this and thought I add some info. I have found out the most latest on our pans they are the plastic versions, which mine is an 16 built in may. I sourced the pan online for 286/325 shipped 2 day, and there were none in the mainland having to have it shipped from Germany for a 2 week turnaround, The fluid Lifeguard 6 I found on Ebay 7 qts for 145 and that included shipping which was a steal as most shipping was 30$. In talking with the local BMW Service Supervisor, he has seen the plastic ones cracking, I need to verify if anyone knows the exact torque settings for the 13 aluminum torx screws?

I hope that's a typo because cannot use Lifeguard 6 in your ZF 8 speed transmission. Lifeguard 8 is needed for all ZF 8hp transmission

Make sure its aluminum as steel has diffrent torque setting

*Aluminum 4nm + 45*angle turn (Replace aluminium screws; jointing torque and angle of rotation must be observed without fail.

*Steel 10nm

Torque Sheet

VERY RARE occurrences of pan cracking, only reason it cracks is if you ran over rocks or hard physical contact of oil sump. Also most service tech overtighten the hell out of the pans bolts resulting in the screw holes cracking, i've seen a few in my previous zf 6 and 8 speed transmissions.

Also here's a service instruction guide

This is a well known mod folks did it back in 2016 when X5M became popular. It's not for protection, it's for improving heat exchange. Aluminum f85 oil pan has better heat dissipation (better fins and plus Aluminum itself dissipates heat better than let's say steel). That is why f85 got it to begin with. Just another extra safety mod to keep oil temps a bit lower.

The irony is that ZF8 transmission is not that bad with temps (but still a good mod to have especially if you often do stop-n-go traffic in summer heat or tend to drive aggressively, tow often etc.), plus we 50i guys have extra oil cooler for it. I'm more concern about TC (transfer case) that if anything will fail (specifically due to heat) long before ZF8 transmission will. Just my opinion.

It's same TC known for barely adequate oil supply for it's clutch and internals (due to poor engineering) - the result is that it starts to slip and then you get a shudder during acceleration etc. Timely TC oil change helps alleviate issues.

I love the DIY ya 50i guys are putting together. Let's keep it going. I'm gonna change my oil this weekend and add a DIY since I couldn't find one for the 50i on this forum. Found a couple through google and YouTube but we should at least have one in our thread. We need a TC oil change and a Rear Diff oil change!! Who's up?! Haha

I know it's old thread, but here's a pdf file I found about our ZF transmission - could be helpful to those changing oil

Isn't the thread just "50i oil pan upgrade - DIY"? Nothing mentioning it's not metal. Just that an upgrade is available. Or is it different now?

Anyone know if the plastic transmission pan is reusable or do you have to replace the whole thing after a drain and fill. Was planning on doing it twice to clean out more of the old fluid. The pics online look like the drain bolt is plastic.

You ever do this. Would love some insight on TC oil change. About to hit 50k miles this summer.

The transmission fluid filter is built into the pan so you should replace it when you change the fluid.

I haven't got around to it yet. I will look into it this week, when I change my oil. It doesn't look hard at all from what I remember. I ll keep you posted.

While I love upgrades, this one seems very unnecessary. If you plan on tracking your x5 then sure but otherwise....

Sorry don't see what you're referring to. Can you take a screen shot? Maybe it's an aftermarket piece you're talking about but the pan for the 50i is steel. Just get under the car and look.

I thought the thread title was referring to the engine oil pan but the thread is about the transmission fluid pan hence the confusion.

The engine oil pan is steel but the transmission fluid pan on the 50i ZF transmission is all plastic, has the fluid filter built into the pan, and should be replaced every time the fluids are changed.

Hence the topic of this thread about upgrading the plastic pan to the metal one from the M.

Ah I see the newer F15s are plastic. Didn't catch that blurb.
