Should I Buy a '16 X5M?

Hi folks, so I'm looking to grab an X5M

Context: Long time forum stalker here. Grew up around my dad's E34 5 Series and have loved Bimmers ever since. Currently have a 2011 Audi A4 beater that I'd keep as a second driver...

The F85 X5 has always had a place in my heart. That platform (really, that BMW generation in general F80, F10) has probably been my favorite modern platform to date - not a fan of the new design language. As far as I've gathered, there is no better SAV than an X5M and I've decided I must have one. I've got to go M

Looking to get opinions from current owners. I would be looking at:
  • 2016, maybe '17
  • ~50K ODO
  • Alpine White / Space Grey Metallic
  • One of 3 interior colors: Black, Brown, or Red
  • Ideally would like to spend ~45K, of course I'd be tacking on an extended warranty

Thoughts? Is that realistic? I'm hoping more examples will produce themselves in the next few months. From what I can tell the S63 doesn't suffer from the overall shittines of the N63, and it seems to be a reliable platform. Looking for either confirmation of my bias or user experience with the car into higher milage

First I would like to say great choice you can't go wrong I've had mine for around 3-4 years now and I do not regret it at all!

As far as paying $45k you can find a few but it's usually with higher mileage in decent condition. All in all take your time and I'm sure you will find exactly what you want if not something close to it for a reasonable price.

I'd say you'd have to wait a bit longer to find some X5M's for that price and mileage. The X6's depreciated faster and are sitting at that price point now. Then again someone is always antsy to sell so I'm sure one will turn up.

As for reliability, the S63 is great from stock to about 700hp.

i have looked around and your price range and mileage requests are a available. If you are up for a nationwide search you can find some on cargurus.

there was a long beach blue x5m with 39k miles, CPO, for 46k, there is a DG one in Redondo Beach for 48k with rear entertainment and 36k miles.

good luck, i was also looking but had to reprioritize a few things with the current times we are under but hope to find one soon.

good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

You'll spend more on fuel and if you are paying a bit more for scheduled maintainence, the tune is not necessary & it still is more fun than anything I've done with clothes on in several years. I would try and find one with some reg or CPO warranty though.

Really torn between this an the F10 M5. The idea of an SAV turns me on, not gonna lie. Anyone have experience with both?

Listen power to weight will always be a factor so it's really all depending on what your looking to do. An 800hp F10 / almost any car will smoke an SAV / SUV due to the major weight difference but also keep in mind that a 7-800 hp vehicle of any kind still isn't a slouch by any means.

I demolished a lot of cars and and my truck / SAV or whatever anyone wants to call it runs 11's with my kids car seat and personal belongings still inside... and that wow factor is what I love lol.

I'm still going to build a car though because it's just a different feel that I can't explain.

To the extent possible, try to research vehicle maintenance and accident history. If there are no red flags, the extended warranty will add a peace of mind. Good luck! You will enjoy X5M - it's a vehicle which will cause the driver to smile more than once.

That's something you'll need to decide for yourself: two totally different cars. If you're after driving experience, the M5 is lighter, can be had with a stick, etc, etc. I also thought about a F10M5 to replace my aging E39M5, but I have other fun to drive cars: '99M3, '05 Elise, '11M3, and still have the '02M5 around. I'll be honest, when I put the X5M in storage and used the M5 during the winter, it made me appreciate the M5 all over again. Sure, the X5 handles in a way that no big/heavy SAV should handle and it makes you giggle when you stomp on it and it just takes off, but it's probably my least favorite to drive (while many say that 8spd ZF tranny is great, I'm eh about it).

Always felt F10 M5 is too big and numb compared to previous models.

Get a F82 M4 and F85 X5M. That's what I ended up buying. M4 is an absolute beast, extremely reliable car, very driver focused.

North state auto still has one I saved when I was trying to decide which one to buy back in DECEMBER! DG, red interior, Bang, $52.5 with 32k miles. I'm sure you could get them under $50k since they've had it so long. It's on cars.com

I think he meant paying up now for lower milage/better condition, or less now and pay later for repairs.
