Engine noise - nothing sinister opinions wanted
Hi all
In for end of warranty check tomorrow and just a question My engine when warm and driving though an area that reflects noise sounds whiny. The whine is not a massive whine just an underlying whine I've asked them before and they say it's normal but the f85 is quite scarce where I live and have no comparison It just sounds a bit crap over the largely satisfying exhaust note but not like a fault as such Same with aircon on or off. |

Not much to go on here.....but if it overwhelms exhaust note, I would be concerned. Sounds like a bearing in some component could be under stress, or a belt tension device near its end ( probably bearing in tensioner. )Tough to localize with all the engine covers...you might spend a hundred £ plus or so for a "tear off covers" diagnostic if not under warranty.

Sorry it was a bit off a rushed post. It doesn't overwhelm the exhaust far from it. It's just quite noticeable when it can echo off something.
So when I drive home I go through a small village with houses either side and when off the throttle or just on it the noise is what I hear as the exhaust is quiet. |

Pretty sure it's not the transmission as if I am in neutral it goes in line with engine revs and sounds like it's at the front.

Specifically ask them to check belts, AC compressor, transfer case and transmission for a whine. Since its at idle i would guess a belt.. if it were only on load.. transmission, transfer case and differential would be possible culprits. Good luck. Edit when you're in the car everything sounds like its coming from the engine bay, this car has pretty good sound isolation from the firewall back. |
