Front differential leak passenger side
So has anyone DIY’d the front diff seal at the axle connection?
I was doing all my driveline fluids today and discovered the front right axle is leaking gear oil. Confirmed it’s gear oil as stinks something fierce. Fluid level was still relatively high in the diff so that was good. Caught it early it seems. So, any good write ups on this or should I just take it to an Indy and expect a bill in the $700 neighborhood? Do these axles snap in with a circlip? Maybe it’s just not seated all the way since I do the right front control arms? Any help appreciated. You can see here it’s actively dripping. View post on imgur.com |

I can see that your axle is plenty seated fine. The seal is failed.
Suspension comes loose at the subframe. Axle is driven out of hub and removed from diff. Adapter comes off. Your leaking adapter has a shaft seal & an o-ring to be replaced. You may considering either doing or paying-for the oil pan gasket job as this bit is included in it. Also, the oil pan is guaranteed to start leaking at some point - perhaps, 60k-140k miles. That gasket is getting brittle from age on your vehicle. My DIY is posted in BimmerFest E70 forum. Essentially, I suspect there are few differences in doing the job on an F15.
