F86 X6M or G06 40i

Basically, title. I can get an more or less equal mileage, 2yr or less MY difference for the same money.

I realize this section will be biased towards the F, but then again maybe someone has cross shopped similar.

I haven’t driven the X6 40i yet, but that B58 sure is a monster in the M340i, and it’s got me thinking.

Personally, I’d go G06 all day. More modern in every way and the B58 is an awesome motor from both a performance and reliability perspective. Obviously the F86 will perform better in a straight line and likely on twisty roads as DHP is no longer available on anything under the M50i model for the G series X5/6. I feel the 40i best blends modernity, styling, performance and reliability, but it depends on whether you absolutely value outright performance over those other considerations.

My 2 cents worth. It depends on the age of the X6M, condition etc. I had a similar decision to make in 2020, get a 2018 X5 50i or 2019 X5 40i. I drove both and picked the F15 over the G05 because the V8 was much more fun for me.

In your situation, I’d take an X6M over a 40i any day of the week. The X6M is a special SUV. Only a few get to experience it. The 40i is the most common type of luxury mid sized SUV out there. It is great, but common.

The G06 is going to be more refined, but the X6M is going to be more fun. The interior space is the same and to be honest, ID6 does pretty much everything ID7 does. You get features like steering assist lane keep assist - which I usually turn off in any case. The camera system on the G05 is a little better, but it won’t lead to any better results when it comes to parking etc.

Also, in general, the X6M will be better equipped than a 40i, especially if you get something from 21.

That is just my pick between a used 40i vs M - current vs last Gen.

You’ll glad with either decision, but M’s are just rarer and more special.

If I wasn’t in an F16 for 4 years now, I’d go F86 without a doubt, but I don’t know if more of the same will scratch the itch, even with the mighty S63. I do like the new design and the interior of the G06.

I’m also considering the M50d, since my experience with the 40d has been great, but they are quite a bit more expensive and I’m not sure if I wanna lay out the cash.

I test drove a G05 40i and F85 X5M back in 2019 when I was looking to replace my old E70 50i.

I ended up buying an F15 50i, only because the F85 was more than I wanted to spend (still $75-$80K for a lower mileage one at the time). Even today I'd easily choose the F85 over an entry level G05 model, regardless of it being a generation newer. The G05 was a boring snooze-fest compared to the ///M, but I guess it depends what you covet most in your driving experiences.

Update - I drove the 40i today. Contrary to what the numbers would suggest, it feels more heavy and inert than my 40d (probably due to the low down torquey nature of the diesel).

I also drove the M50d, it’s an absolute beast. Have some thinking to do around upping the budget a bit
