Need Advice: F15 35i as a DD

Hi Gang,

I come to you in hopes of wisdom and guidance. The past 10 years I have been lurking over on the e90/e92 side of the tracks. My past 3 BMW's have been a 2006 325i, 2008 335i, and a 2013 335is (I miss her dearly). My most recent event was in October 2017, I sold my 335is and purchased a 2017 Prius Prime. The Prius has honestly been "fun" in a completely opposite way, averaging about 60mpg on my 80/20 highway/city commute of 75-100 miles. With that being said, the car does not inspire any true driving dynamics like the 3 series did. Nonetheless, I plan on handing over the Prius to the lady in the fall to replace her Camry that needs to find the nearest cliff.

Now, I am interested in having more space and practicality, and I have been kicking the tires on getting back into euro game, and picking up a 2015 X5 35i with hopefully a little warranty and CPO. After reading many threads on maintenance and cost of ownership, I am looking for advice from the crew here regarding picking up a X5 for my roughly 100 mile daily commute. Also, my job compensates me for fuel, so gas and a monthly stipend are in play here. Here are a few questions I am really interested in:

Is the car comfortable?
Is it fun?
Would you buy all over again?

The safe play would be to go buy a new Highlander, however I feel that I will be equally as bored if I went that route.

My commute is only 30 miles a day but I have zero complaints. Fits your requirements imo.

Go for it the x5 is a great riding vehicle and the 35i is a very good dependable engine , plus it very roomy and can haul some stuff!

I commute 80 miles a day in mine, so a similar distance to yours.
Yes, it’s vey comfortable.
Yes, I find it a ‘fun’ vehicle to commute in. Sure there are other options that would be more fun to drive daily but when it comes to a SAV/SUV it’s hard to beat.
Yes, I’d buy one again to replace mine and plan on it.

There is no way I’d consider a Highlander when a F15 is an option. No dice!

The 35i has power when I need it, handles great, smooth ride, minimum road noise, looks great and they aren’t everywhere I look. I may see two a week on my commute.

I don't have a commute at all, but it's still comfortable to drop the kids off at school. I have the multi-contour seats though, and wouldn't have it any other way. If you want comfort, then you must get these seats.

It's a great car for your daily commute, just wish mine was little longer so that I would have more time to enjoy driving my car. P1et is correct, the multi-contour seats are a must. Love the responsiveness of the engine in Comfort and especially in Sport mode (w/ MPPK).

Will definitely buy another one in the future.

We had the latest highlander, traded it in on x5 35i. Decent vehicle if you like appliances. Don't do it. I bought it because it had a lot of features for the money back when it first came out. But no soul. X5 is like a big old comfy sports sedan. It's gonna feel bigger and obviously not as "sharp" as a sports sedan, but you get used to it. You can hustle it around turns and off Ramps pretty darn fast. Now I have the 50i and what a monster. It truly is a sleeper. People simply do not understand the performance capabilities until they drive or ride in it.

And, in the 40k miles I drove the 35i... zero problems. Oil changes, that's it.

Make sure you look at the m-sport model, has nice seats and the body looks much better. I have a 2008 335i 6spd with over 400hp. I don't mind driving my wife's x5 when we have the family with us. Certainly not as much fun as my car but it's close and way more comfortable.

Wife was huge on the Highlander so I test drove it and quickly told her "it's like driving a damn minivan". We then immediately headed over to BMW and she fell in love with our '15 X5 35i. It had 52K miles on it and no CPO which we were alittle worried about. We've dumped a few grand into an emergency/maintenance account if something arises. We've owned it for about 3 weeks now and love it! N55 motor has been around for awhile and seems tried and true. So tired of hearing friends and such say "maintenance will cost you a fortune". Not if you have a trustworthy indy to take it to. I plan on taking care of the X5 just as well as I did my E46 M3, which btw I sold with 130K miles on it and had no issues other than the starter and maintenance stuff. Moral of the story, get the X5

I almost clicked the "Report this post" when I read this crazy talk...335is to Prius...and fun in the same sentence, hahaha.

Although the 35i is not a sports car, it has a lot of life in it. It's comfortable and I actually average around 23 so not horrible for SUV. My 550i averaged 19!

Forget that senior citizen Highlander and pick up the X5. No question what the right choice is here if you can afford it.

If you have to have a Toyota...get the 4Runner instead. Has more character.
