Maverick I feel your pain man. I would have yelled f@@@%&*^%%ck! if it was me. This is so frustrating after an excellent work you've put in. Let's hope you'll find that bugger that squeaks

Ya I knew I shoulda just done both but was trying to save money. Given how little to no change at all my alignment was affected after doing the driver side. I love just do this next weekend and not get another alignment.

How many miles do you have on it.. Is this "normal" for this vehicle at this mileage to have both gone bad?

33k and not normal but frequent from what I've heard. It's a shame. Feel it should be coveted by BMW as there is supposedly a SIB. But some have reported their dealers claiming to not have anything for the sib.

Any suspension components failing at 30k miles is poorly designed. Period. This isn't a race car and isn't driven as such. Spirited sure but cmon.

Are the replacement wishbones fixed from the defect or can we expect this to happen again ? The dealer fixed mine under warranty at 40k

This seems similar to the HVAC problem. Not everybody has it, but enough people do to make you think there was a defective batch at some point. These suspensions are meant to last 100s of thousands of miles; unless of course you drive off road or in some third world country. They should have recalled them as this is a safety issue, too.

Yes if you're still under factory warranty. Mine ran out in March and no extended warranties cover suspension components. Even the $3.5k I spent on a BMW platinum doesn't cover it which is why I'm doing them myself. That and I like doing my own vehicle work when I can. I enjoy it.

The part looks exactly the same so not sure if they've changed it. Maybe different kinds of bushings.

Just got this work done on my 2016 X5. Under warranty. There was a clunk noise when I put reverse at very low speed and also a noticeable clunk while driving at low speed.
Both side lower control arms(wishbone) where replaced.
FYI: Milage is 27,000

I'm wondering if this would be done under warranty when your 4 year warranty expired, but you still have 1 more year of CPO warranty (like in my case)?

Can't hurt to ask. Tell me what the problem is and ask if its covered. I just ordered my passenger side one today. Should be here Friday.

I might have same noise, but so far it happened only twice and I can't reproduce it. I'm guessing it may get worse over time. I'm out of 4 year warranty that ended March, but I have extra year of CPO warranty. So I was wondering should I go to dealer (if this wishbone replacement is covered under CPO warranty) or I shouldn't even bother and probably should tackle same job down the road?

Basically, I'm not sure if CPO covers it or not. We know that 4 year warranty covers it.

I'm having the same issue and my dealer made me bring it in since my 4 year/50K warranty is coming up in August. Mine is CPO as well and they mentioned it wouldn't be covered.

Good news is that the SIB everyone shared on here was very helpful and they tackled it right away. Getting it back this week. Fingers crossed.

Ya mine was really bad one weekend. And then I took it in Monday and I couldn't pay it to make a noise. Then two weeks later it came back and never left but since I knew I was out of warranty I said screw it and decided not to even try and Dick around with the dealer. I have a $200 CO pay anyway and the alignment is $250 alone for active steering which wouldn't be covered either.

Given it was still in the green I won't be doing another alignment after the passenger side.

Wear and tear parts are not covered under warranty. Doing both control arms myself. They did hit me with the $175 inspection cost bc i didn't let them do the work.

Got any details on the SIB or is it just hearsay? Don’t really see anything concrete in this thread...

My dealer wants $1100 to replace the cracked bushings (and presumably arms - I believe it’s one part?)

My dealer knew about the SIB. But it won't matter if you're out of factory warranty. My dealer also wanted $1000 for both sides. Each oem control arm is about $300. Yes, they change the whole control arm, not bushings only.

The SIB is covered in other threads. This is a DIY. If you are under warranty then don't need a DIY.

I always recommend replacing suspension components in pairs since you have to do an alignment anyway. Brake components too, though you don't need an alignment...

OP: Great DIY and nice work getting this fixed!
